Chapter 89: Heterochromia, 4-Star Vulpix
Kenji lowered his head, pulled out his phone, and opened a short video app. Big Data never disappoints; the first video was a sweet-looking girl dancing.
"Here, turn into this one," he said.
Vulpix merely glanced at it. The next moment, the purplish-black light flashed again. When the light subsided, the handsome young man was gone, replaced by a sweet-looking girl.
Kenji swallowed hard, marveling that the Illusion ability was far more versatile here than in the games.
Kenji scrolled through his phone again, finding a photo of a curvy, long-legged woman with a slender waist—a "Mature Goddess" type—and held it up to Vulpix.
"Here, try this one for me."
Vulpix didn't hesitate. Another purplish-black light flashed. Its form elongated, instantly transforming into the slender-waisted, long-legged, and curvy mature woman from the photo.
Kenji put away his phone and tentatively poked the woman's face.
"So soft..."
The sensation felt far too real.
Amidst his shock, Kenji remembered a line from the official Pokédex entry for Zoroark in his past life: it mentioned that solitary trainers sometimes asked their Zoroark to create illusions to alleviate their loneliness...
Kenji's thoughts spiraled further and further into uncomfortable territory, his expression growing strained. He quickly slapped his own face twice.
"Maybe you should change back into your body first."
Looking at the mature woman, the thought of its true form being a small red fox just felt too weird.
Vulpix blinked, its face outwardly calm, but it asked Kenji telepathically.
"You don't like it?"
Kenji was completely dumbfounded, his mind buzzing.
What do you mean, 'don't like it?'
That's a stupid question! Who wouldn't like a beautiful woman?
But while he thought this, Kenji obviously couldn't say it. He pretended to be unbothered. "It's fine, but you look weird like this. Change back for now."
"Oh."
A flash of purplish-black light. The mature woman vanished, and the small red fox reappeared in the room.
Vulpix's face held a hint of lingering excitement.
"When we're outside, don't reveal your ability to transform into people, got it?" Kenji warned with a stern face.
"Yo-mo..."
Vulpix nodded obediently.
Seeing Vulpix was listening, Kenji tentatively brought up the Star Up process. "Aren't you curious about what I did to you?"
"Yo-mo..."
Vulpix's eyes instantly lit up. It was clearly very interested in this question.
"Hmm... You can just think of it as my special ability. The exact principle is hard to explain, but the bottom line is that it can make you very, very strong." Kenji explained.
Vulpix was clearly not completely satisfied with that explanation.
Kenji didn't try to elaborate further. He took out a few more Vulpix, fusing them into 2-Stars.
Vulpix watched the entire process with curious interest, seemingly fascinated by the Star Up mechanism.
After spending some time, Kenji finally got Vulpix up to 4-Stars.
Vulpix (4-Star)
Sex: Female
Level: 47
Type: Fire
Base Stats: 479 (HP: 61, Attack: 66, Defense: 64, Sp. Atk: 80, Sp. Def: 104, Speed: 104)
Abilities: Drought, Illusion
Moves: Hypnosis, Confusion, Confuse Ray, Will-O-Wisp, Fire Spin, Flamethrower, Safeguard, Dream Eater, Teleport, Future Sight...
Potential: S+
Looking at the Vulpix before him, Kenji's expression was conflicted.
Although Vulpix's potential was listed as S+, it would be more accurate to call it "Half-Step [ULTIMATE]."
Vulpix's eyes, which were originally both amber, were now heterochromatic. The color of its two eyes was completely different.
One was a vibrant red, and the other was a contrasting water-blue.
Not only that, but as its level increased, Vulpix had learned many new moves.
But he was certain Vulpix wasn't supposed to learn Psychic moves like Teleport, right?
Undeniably, there was a range within the S+ potential rank. Vulpix's potential was clearly higher than Gyarados's, which was also S+.
Vulpix, too, seemed to be adjusting to its recently explosively enhanced body.
The Level 47 Vulpix had instantly become the second-highest leveled Pokémon in Kenji's team.
As for its actual strength... a level 47 Vulpix might not actually be able to beat a level 36 Gyarados equipped with three items and 720 base stats.
"Come on. Let's go meet your partners," Kenji said, tapping Vulpix on the head.
Vulpix very naturally used its psychic power to lift itself into Kenji's arms.
Holding Vulpix, Kenji walked out of the room. While he'd been busy with the Star Up, his other Pokémon had already finished their dinner. Their bowls were empty.
Seeing Kenji approach, they all looked up.
"Let me introduce you. This is our new partner, Vulpix," Kenji said, stroking Vulpix's soft fur.
Beedrill showed no reaction, other than perhaps a mild pleasure that Kenji had gotten a new Pokémon.
Gyarados's expression, however, was grave. It could clearly sense an aura from the Vulpix in Kenji's arms that made it deeply wary.
First Arbok, and now this Vulpix.
It seemed every single Pokémon its trainer captured was inherently strong.
Gyarados had never doubted its own talent, having successfully evolved from the weak Magikarp through sheer perseverance.
But as its trainer collected more and more Pokémon, Gyarados felt immense pressure from both Arbok and Vulpix.
Its own pride and joy—its talent—didn't seem so outstanding among its trainer's Pokémon.
Gyarados could not accept that the Pokémon its trainer caught next would surpass it.
Its pride would not allow it to be the weak link on the team!
