Chapter 85 - Chapter 85: Vulpix

Chapter 85: Vulpix

Kenji shot up from the sofa and followed Director He out, not even bothering to ask what the "resources" were.

Whatever it was, given Metropolis Academy's extravagance, it couldn't be bad.

Outside the colosseum, Director He took a Pokéball from his waist.

"Come out, Pidgeot."

A red flash, and a large Pidgeot appeared on the open ground.

Pidgeot

Level: LV.62

Ability: Keen Eye

Potential: B

Though Director He looked portly, he was a surprisingly agile fat man. He effortlessly flipped onto Pidgeot's back and patted the space behind him. "Get on. This thing is much faster than a car."

Of course, it was. At level 62, that was a Gym Leader-level Pokémon. How could it not be fast?

It was a testament to the status of a department head at a place like Metropolis Academy, to use a Gym Leader-level Pokémon as a personal chauffeur.

Director He must also be a very powerful trainer himself.

Kenji's mind wandered, but his movements were swift. He climbed onto Pidgeot's back.

"Hold on tight," Director He instructed. Pidgeot cried out and flapped its wings, taking off.

Flying in the air, Kenji watched the scenery blur beneath them, letting out a gasp of surprise.

Having a Flying-type Pokémon as a ride was indeed much more convenient.

Gyarados could fly, but such a massive Gyarados flying through the air was just too conspicuous.

Pidgeot's flight speed was incredible. The Pokédex explicitly stated that Pidgeot could reach a stunning Mach 2.

That's 680 meters per second.

But clearly, the Pidgeot beneath them wasn't flying at full speed. Still, it took less than a minute before they landed again.

Kenji glanced at their destination.

It was a Breeding House.

However, this one was much smaller than the Poison-type Breeding House he had visited before.

"Let's go, inside."

Director He started walking in.

"Don't let the size fool you. Every Pokémon in this Breeding House has a potential of A-Rank or higher. Students usually only get to choose Pokémon from here after achieving excellent results in major competitions."

Director He explained as they walked.

Kenji followed him. The staff inside clearly recognized Director He.

Director He spoke with a staff member for a moment, and the staffer nodded, letting them both enter the deeper part of the facility.

"I see you only have four Pokéballs on your waist. You haven't filled up your team of six yet. I brought you here today to pick a Pokémon."

As Director He spoke, they walked into the outdoor field where the Pokémon were active.

Kenji scanned the area. Just as Director He had said, there wasn't a single Pokémon with a potential below A-Rank.

The lowest he saw was A-.

And the Pokémon frolicking in the field were exceptionally rare. Pokémon like Scyther, Abra, Magby, and Gligar—Pokémon whose rarity often exceeded the starters—were everywhere here.

This made the few starters in the field look decidedly ordinary.

But as Kenji walked and looked, he couldn't find a single S-Rank Pokémon.

"Director He, are there any S-Rank potential Pokémon in this Breeding House?" Kenji asked curiously.

Director He shook his head. "No. S-Rank potential Pokémon are too rare. Even our Metropolis Academy can't guarantee one S-Rank Pokémon per year. Any Pokémon detected with S-Rank potential is usually snatched up within a day."

"Snatch." Since Director He used that word, it showed just how fiercely S-Rank potential Pokémon were contested.

Seeing Kenji's disappointment, Director He patted his shoulder comfortingly. "Don't worry. Metropolis Academy never stints on investing in geniuses. The next time an S-Rank Pokémon is bred, I'll do my best to secure it for you."

Kenji felt a warmth spread through him and thanked Director He.

Since there were no S-Rank Pokémon, Kenji could be more casual in his selection.

His first consideration was a Pokémon that could serve as a mount. In the wilderness, riding a Pokémon was much more convenient than driving.

There were many suitable Flying-type Pokémon in the Breeding House, like Swablu, Noibat, and Charmander, whose final evolutions all made excellent mounts.

For ground travel, there were Pokémon like Growlithe, Rhyhorn, and Ponyta.

Director He didn't follow too closely, waiting quietly nearby.

"Take me with you."

"Trainer."

Kenji was still pondering his choice when a tender, little girl's voice suddenly rang in his ear.

Kenji shot his head up, a chill running down his spine.

"Who said that?"

Thankfully, it was broad daylight. Kenji immediately realized that the voice was most likely a Psychic or Ghost-type Pokémon playing a trick.

Any Pokémon capable of using telepathy must be extremely intelligent and highly gifted.

Kenji looked around but couldn't find any Psychic or Ghost-type Pokémon. Until...

His gaze settled. Kenji walked toward the small creature under a tree, knelt on the grass, and asked in confusion, "Did you just speak to me?"

Under the tree, a fiery-red creature with six tails sat quietly. Its large, beautiful, clear amber eyes were fixed intently on him.

Vulpix

Level: LV.38

Ability: Drought

Potential: A+

Level 38! Kenji was slightly surprised. Pokémon at this high of a level were quite rare in a breeding facility.

"Trainer."

"Take me with you."

It was the same familiar voice. The Vulpix in front of him cried out softly and nodded its head.

"Yo-mo..."
