Chapter 66: The Third Pseudo-Legendary Recipient! Zayne!

Zayne waved at the opponent opposite him, his voice thick with a distinct Western Region accent. "Hey, friend! Give up, yah? Your Pokémon's strength, next to my Pokémon, is like a little sparrow under an eagle's wings. You cannot win, mah."

Kenji: "..."

Zayne's ridiculous, arrogant words clearly didn't have the intended effect.

Instead, his opponent just stared blankly for a long moment, only belatedly realizing what Zayne was trying to say.

"This will be a 3v3 battle. Each side has one opportunity to switch their Pokémon. The match ends when all Pokémon on one side are unable to battle."

By the time the opponent figured it all out, the referee had already started announcing the rules. As he finished, the green flag in his hand swooped down.

"Battle, begin!!"

"Go! My partner!"

"Let's go! Arcanine!"

Both trainers spoke, and two Pokémon landed on the battlefield.

The Pokémon in front of Zayne was humanoid. Its head, legs, and lips were a striking red. Its upper body was slender, while its lower half was comparatively wide and baggy.

With such an iconic appearance, it was clearly the Meditate Pokémon, Medicham, a Psychic/Fighting-type.

Opposite Medicham was a large, majestic Pokémon. Its body had the black and orange stripes of a tiger, with thick, white fur covering its neck and legs.

Just standing there, it looked incredibly dignified.

Medicham

Level: LV.44

Ability: Pure Power (The Pokémon's Attack stat is doubled.)

Potential: A-

Arcanine

Level: LV.20

Ability: Flash Fire (When hit by a Fire-type move, the Pokémon takes no damage; its own Fire-type moves are powered up.)

Potential: D+

For some reason, perhaps because the system upgrade had also upgraded his "Data-Eye," Kenji could now see a Pokémon's level and potential even through the electronic screen.

Medicham's level was high, a startling level 44. Its potential was also an A-. Without a doubt, this Medicham was Zayne's main powerhouse.

Sending out his ace right from the start... it certainly fit Zayne's arrogant personality.

In contrast, the opposing Arcanine was only level 20, pathetically low, with a mere D+ potential.

It looked like this was his opponent's Pokémon from the Trainer Licensing Exam.

Growlithe were known for their strong sense of justice, so artificially-bred Growlithe almost never entered the public market. The vast majority of them were "born with a badge," partnered with League police officers.

Wild Growlithe were extremely rare, even more so than the starter Pokémon.

Unless your family had special connections within the police force, there was no way you were getting a Growlithe for your entrance exam.

However, the exam had a clear rule: Pokémon without a natural evolution were banned. Furthermore, Pokémon that evolved via stones or trading with held items were forbidden from evolving during the exam period, or it would be treated as a violation.

If not for that rule, Pokémon like Pinsir, Heracross, and Arcanine, all with base stats over 500, would dominate.

But even so, a Growlithe, with its 350 base stats, was still higher than the starters, making it an excellent choice for the exam.

It was just a shame... evolving it into an Arcanine at only level 20 was far, far too early.

"Medicham! Close in, use Brick Break!"

"Arcanine! Use Flamethrower!"

Seeing Medicham charge, the opponent quickly ordered Arcanine to use Flamethrower, trying to force it back.

"Confusion! Tear the flames apart!!" Zayne shouted.

At the command, a faint blue light glowed in Medicham's eyes.

"Chaa-rem!!—"

With a sharp cry, its psychic power enveloped the incoming pillar of fire. With a violent pull of its hands, the Flamethrower was ripped in two, parting down the middle.

The flames passed harmlessly on either side of Medicham.

In that instant, Medicham appeared right in front of Arcanine. It raised its hand, which was wreathed in powerful Fighting-type energy, and brought it chopping down.

"AWOOOO!!!!"

With a piteous cry, Arcanine's large body was sent flying backward, fainting on impact.

"Oh my goodness! Zayne's Medicham used Confusion to alter the path of the Flamethrower and took down Arcanine in a single blow!!"

"Arcanine is unable to battle! Medicham is the winner!"

The crowd instantly erupted in applause.

Zayne, for his part, completely ignored the battle. He turned to the audience and began bowing and waving, already adopting a victor's pose.

This clearly enraged his opponent. He immediately recalled Arcanine and gripped another Ultra Ball.

"Go! Azumarill!!"

A blue, rabbit-like Pokémon with a round body and a white, polka-dotted belly appeared on the field.

Azumarill

Level: LV.39

Ability: Huge Power

Potential: B-

As expected of a family that could produce an Arcanine, their other Pokémon wouldn't be weak.

The "Aqua Rabbit," Azumarill, had been respectfully dubbed the "Dragon Slayer" ever since the Fairy type was discovered.

It looked cute and harmless, but it just so happened to possess the god-tier ability, Huge Power.

This meant that even with a base 50 Attack stat, it could still one-shot a dragon with an Ice Punch.

As Azumarill appeared, Zayne acted as if he hadn't even noticed, still playing to the crowd as if he'd forgotten he was in a battle.

This feeling of being ignored was, without a doubt, a humiliation to his opponent.

"Azumarill! Use Aqua Jet, then follow up with Play Rough!"

"Rill-Rill!!—"

At the command, a pillar of water suddenly formed around Azumarill, enveloping its body. Then, like a launched missile, it used the force of the water to blast off toward Medicham.
