Chapter 3 - Safe house

The SUV sped through the darkened city, weaving through backstreets and alleyways with a practiced ease that suggested Dimitri knew the city like the back of his hand. Anya watched him, her mind racing, trying to piece together who this man was and why he had intervened in her life.

"Where are you taking me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"To a safe place" Dimitri replied, his gaze unwavering. "Somewhere they won't find you."

After what felt like an eternity the SUV turned down a narrow, unmarked road leading to a secluded industrial area on the outskirts of the city. Dimitri pulled up to a nondescript warehouse, its windows dark and lifeless.

"Get out" he said, his voice brooking no argument.

Anya hesitated but complied, stepping out of the vehicle and into the cold night air. The warehouse loomed before her, a silent sentinel in the darkness. She shivered, not from the cold but from a sense of foreboding.

Dimitri led her to a side entrance, punching in a code on a keypad. The door clicked open revealing a dimly lit corridor. He ushered her inside and the door slammed shut behind them, plunging them into near darkness.

As her eyes adjusted Anya realised that the warehouse was not what it seemed. The interior had been transformed into a high-tech sanctuary, with state-of-the-art security systems, surveillance equipment and a fully equipped living space. It was a safehouse, a fortress designed to withstand any threat.

"Welcome to your new home" Dimitri said, his voice echoing in the cavernous space. "At least for now."

Anya stared at him, her mind reeling. "Who are you Dimitri? What do you do?"

He turned to her, his blue eyes intense. "I'm someone who knows the truth about OmniCorp" he said. "And I'm here to help you expose them."

He led her to a small, sparsely furnished room, containing a bed, a desk, and a computer. "This is your space" he said. "Get some rest. We have a lot to discuss in the morning."

Anya watched him leave, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and suspicion. She didn't trust Dimitri, not completely. But she knew that he was her only chance of survival.

She sat down at the computer, her fingers itching to access the data she had glimpsed before. But she knew that it was too dangerous. OmniCorp was watching, waiting for her to make a mistake.

For now she would have to trust Dimitri but trust was a dangerous game and Anya knew that in this world of shadows and secrets, betrayal could come from anywhere.
