Chapter 7: The Golden Flash
The team of four worked perfectly together. Each person blocked attacks from a different direction. But to the enemy jonin, they just looked like trapped animals making a last stand.
A jonin named Naraku, who wore a Kirigakure forehead protector, smirked. "And these are Konoha's elite? I don't think so. It looks like we can finish this job quickly and go collect our reward."
The others felt the same. They hadn't expected the mission to be this easy. The powerful explosion from the green ninja had startled them for a moment, but they quickly calmed down. They all knew about explosive power techniques. The user gets strong for a short time, but gets very weak afterward. Then, they would be easy to finish off.
That was their plan. Wait for the burst of power to end.
Their team captain spoke up. "It's fine to joke, but don't let your guard down. That Konoha ninja is a known taijutsu master. His father was a ninja too, famous for taking on several elite jonin alone. Especially you, Naraku. You know that, right?"
Naraku just grunted, clearly brushing off the warning. He kept his focus on Might Guy's team.
In a flash, the five Konoha ninja were almost upon the Kirigakure squad's position.
That's when the captain suddenly shouted. "Wait! One of them is missing! The one they were protecting in the middle—he's gone! Everyone, be on guard!"
As soon as he finished speaking, there was no reply from his team. Instead, they heard Naraku make a choked, gurgling sound.
"Cap-tain... be care—" Then, his voice was cut off forever.
A cold chill shot up the captain's spine. He was so scared he didn't even dare to look back. He immediately dodged to the side. Takahashi's kunai sliced through the air where his neck had just been. The captain had reacted incredibly fast. A lesser ninja would have turned to look first.
Takahashi didn't press the attack. He flashed away, returning to his team in an instant. The charge and the attack had used up a lot of his chakra. But as a result, the fog around them had thinned out noticeably.
He landed back with the team, breathing heavily. The others hadn't seen what happened clearly. Only Neji's Byakugan had barely been able to track it—a blur of light vanishing, then reappearing in their midst.
Even though the details were fuzzy, the fading mist told them one thing: Takahashi had done something amazing in that split second he was gone.
For some reason, Neji felt a chill. To kill a jonin instantly, without a trace... if Takahashi weren't a Konoha ninja, Neji might have been the one to disappear during their last fight.
Back with the team, Takahashi spoke calmly. "The southwest team. Three are down. One jonin escaped toward the southeast. Neji, use your Byakugan to keep a lock on that one. We can use him to find the last rat hiding in the dark."
Neji was startled for a second. "Right!" he answered without hesitation. For some reason, he felt that listening to Takahashi now was the right move.
Led by Guy, the team didn't go for the four in the northeast. They headed straight for the southeast—toward the hidden knife in the shadows.
Meanwhile, the ninja hiding in a tall tree in the southeast saw his companion running right for him. He cursed under his breath. That idiot! Running this way was just giving away his position!
What a fool. And he calls himself a captain? I'll have to report this when we get back.
At the same time, the four-person squad in the northeast saw the Konoha team change direction, heading straight for their hidden ace. This was bad.
The leader of this squad went by the code name "Inu" (Dog). One of his jonin spoke up. "Dog, let's go down and split their formation. That kid in the middle of their team is strange. If we separate the Konoha ninja in front, we can take out that weird kid, then surround the green-jump-suited jonin. What do you think?"
Inu thought for a moment. It seemed like the safest plan. "Alright. You three, break their team apart. I'll keep an eye on the one in green."
The jonin who had spoken was strong, a master of Water Style, and the third strongest in their nine-man team.
He led the two chunin, charging from the side to cut off the Konoha team's path. Feeling confident, he let his guard down.
That's when Neji called out. "Watch out! Three from the northeast! One jonin, two chunin! No—wait, there's another— They're trying to split us up!"
Right then, they heard one of the enemy ninja shout, "Water Style: Water Trumpet!"
A powerful jet of water shot toward them. But a sudden scream cut through the air. The jonin had been focused on his jutsu, his vision blocked. Takahashi saw the opening and took it. In a flash of light, a kunai found the jonin's heart.
The scream made the two chunin's hearts leap into their throats. They hadn't seen anything clearly. Just a flash of golden light, and their leader was a corpse on the ground.
Seeing this, Might Guy roared. "Now's our chance! BURN, YOUTH! Konoha's Blue Beast strikes! Konoha Whirlwind!"
He launched himself forward, his powerful kicks sending the two terrified chunin flying. They crashed to the ground, coughing up blood.
"You were great, Takahashi!" Guy yelled. "I don't know how you did it, but your strength is truly admirable!"
Tenten and Neji were just as impressed. To take out a jonin with that kind of speed... even Kakashi at his age couldn't have done that. Probably not even the legendary Minato Namikaze, at Takahashi's age, could have dealt with two jonin and two chunin so quickly.
With the flanking team wiped out in an instant, the jonin who was supposed to be keeping Guy busy froze. He didn't know whether to attack or run.
The ninja called Inu was completely lost. What just happened? One flash of golden light, and his companion was dead.
Now, he was facing the entire Team Guy alone. He looked at the raging green beast and the unnaturally fast boy. He swallowed hard. He didn't want to fight a lunatic with six gates open and a speed demon.
Only one word was left in his mind: Run. The faster, the better.
But Might Guy's fighting spirit exploded even stronger. "It's too late to run now! BURN, YOUTH! Front Lotus!"
Inu's speed was nothing compared to Guy's. Guy caught him in a second, grabbing him and unleashing a furious combo of attacks in mid-air. The assault lasted a full ten seconds before the enemy ninja's body hit the ground.
The team moved forward to check. The man was barely breathing.
