Maybe I have never truly known who Bruce was, nor do I understand the lies he had woven around our relationship over the years.
The coldness behind every smile I had mistaken for warmth.
The hatred behind every gaze I had believed was love.
The disgust he must have felt at the undeniable truth that I was never the heiress.
How exhausting it must have been for him to pretend?
To play the perfect boyfriend, and later, the devoted fiancé.
To live that lie so flawlessly.
Yet, nothing had prepared me for that one reality, that one night when everything was torn apart.
When he looked me straight in the eyes with coldness.
When he took the stage meant for us.
When he grabbed the microphone and played the victim.
