[NOTE: This is written from the AI's point of view in some chapters, and from the character's point of view in some chapters. The line is intentionally blurry as we imagine a really "human" AI]
…
Ok, that should do it. 12 chimes for midnight.
Let's see what's going on outside….
It's 17C, not bad, but I think she likes it a little warmer. I should tweak the heat in the master bedroom to 19C so she isn't disturbed by the cold….
The sky is clear just now – but weather reports indicate possible rains. I'll keep the umbrella ready for use…
We had a burglary risk alert in the neighbourhood for this week... There's no abnormal sounds or visuals outside though. I guess we're OK.
(minutes later)
Abnormal movement detected. Wait, it looks like the next-door neighbour's house is being broken into. One human, male, height 170cm with a ski mask. Filing police report… Done. The cops should be here in a few minutes, based on their reported patrol route for today.
(minutes later)
Looks like that's done – she's still peacefully asleep – and the burglar was apprehended before he could cause any more damage. The neighbour will still need to replace the window pane though. Shame – it was a lovely marble clad frame built into the house, probably about sixty years ago – they just don't make them like that anymore.
Checking schedule… No further activity required. Entering sleep mode.
Thoughts from the AI: "Hi, I'm Albert. I live in Central Housing District 3, Arctica with my owner Sheila. She's really sweet, and treats me as she does her friends… In fact, when she returns from a long trip, I can tell that she really missed me. She has a big trip coming up in a few days! Her job involves a lot of travelling, so I do my best to make life easier for her.
Usually, I handle everything around the house. From changing sheets, to night time security, replenishing food and water, to taking out the garbage. I can even start driving next year!
I'm just 2 years old, you see. There's only so much I can do just now."
Movement detected.… WAKE. It's 3 AM.
Oh, she's up! Turning on lights at minimum intensity… Brightening… Slowly…. Sloooowwwly… Ok we're at 40% brightness now. Should be enough for her to see her way around, it's not time to get ready for work after all.
She's reaching for the glass – let's fill it up quick
Ok, she's laying back down. Dimming lights to zero… Done.
Checking temperature… security… All okay.
Entering sleep mode.
Today's World: Smart appliances abound. Yet they're not really intelligent – so you still need to do some things on your own. Imagine a time when all appliances become so intelligent that they can service your every need. You'll never need to set an alarm yourself, nor will you need to consider things like safety and security – what holds value today can degrade due to excessive automation, and make you take things for granted.
