Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: By Chance or Fate

As sunshine flowed into his room, Toya awoke. He squinted his eyes trying not to go blind. Right after he arrived at the village he had gone straight to an inn. Too tired to even eat dinner, he went to the room he booked and fell asleep. But now he regretted that decision, he was starving. He was convinced that his stomach growled loud enough for the whole building to hear. He looked around. The room, located on the second floor, was made up of a little table, a mirror and the bed he was in. Other than that, he had the door to his left and a window to his right. As he got up, he looked in the mirror to be met with his own reflection. He had bags under his eyes, and his hair was messy like he had just been in a fight. Before he went down to eat, he went to the bathroom down the hall. There he washed his face and tried to do something about his hair. He couldn't do much since he had nothing to brush it with. He tried using his hands but that just made it worse. Seeing he wouldn't be able to do more about it he went down to the dining hall. He could hear quiet chatter as he came closer. But as he reached for the handle he hesitated. He didn't really know how to interact with people or rather he was afraid of it. He didn't want anyone to know about him. He didn't want them to know of the blood that had stained his hands. He was afraid that when he entered, he would be met with eyes full of disgust. He thought about turning around and go back to his room, but his stomach wouldn't stop growling. He sighed, reached the handle and opened the door.

Once he entered, he was met with warm light pouring through the windows, and a smell of something delicious. There was quiet a few groups scattered across the room, eating and chattering quietly. No one seemed to notice him, no stares, no whispers. Relief bloomed in his chest, even if just a little. He found a small table in one of the corners and sat down. Not long after a kind-looking older woman came by and placed a stew and some fresh baked bread in front of him. She offered a kind smile, and Toya muttered a soft thank you under his breath. He ate the food as if he hadn't eaten in days. While he kept stuffing his face his ears caught fragments of the others conversation. He heard some about trading and work not really paying much attention to those. But there was one that peaked his interest. A pair of young men, probably a little under 20, were chattering a few tables away.

"…they said the guild's got a few new quests lately more than usual."

"Yeah, but they are only for registered adventures." He said clearly annoyed.

Guild? Toya stopped for a moment. The word stirred inside of him. Adventurer. He hadn't thought much of it. But now that they mentioned it, it would make traveling easier. It would be easier to travel from town to town, easier to find work, shelter, food and earn some money while at it. And it wouldn't be strange for him to travel if he had a form of verification. The rest of their conversation faded into the background as he began to wonder. As he thought more and more about it, he came to the conclusion that it would be the best cause of action. In the back of his mind, he thanked the pair as he passed them on his way out.

As he got out in the sunshine, he saw the sun had rose a little while he ate. He didn't know where the guild was, but that didn't matter. He was just going to walk around in hopes of finding it. After all that way he could get to see more of the town. But if he didn't find it before the sunset, he would ask someone for directions. But for now, he would enjoy this. The freedom of being able to do whatever he wanted at least for now. He knew that someday he would be forced into situations he wanted nothing to do with, that's the way of the world. And such he walked down the streets. It was just as lively as when he entered yesterday. Children running around playing. Adults chattering. He was still amazed by the tall buildings, but still, he didn't really feel safe with them. It was like a cage holding him in without a place to run to. He gritted his teeth there is nothing to do about it, it is the ways bigger town and villages are build. The streets were filled with stalls some with food, weapons and armory others with different kinds of jewelry. Every time he stopped to look at something the merchants always got so annoying, so after a bit he kept his distance. After a few hours of walking, he had asked an older man for directions. As he followed them, he came to a quieter area with no stalls and not a lot of people. It wasn't as lively here and the air colder. He could feel a chill run down his spine. He had been told to walk down this street, then turn the left corner and he should be there. But as he turned the corner his eyes locked with a man walking in the opposite direction. He looked tired and had worn out clothes on. His hair was brown and eyes blue. The way he carried himself reminded him of soldiers and the sword by his hip made that even more possible. As they passed each other they felt something strange. But the moment passed and neither thought much of it. He could hear the person footsteps slowing a bit, like he was struck by a thought but dismissed it. In the end he said nothing just kept walking. A few steps later a massive building, made out of solid stone, came into view. As Toya looked up, he saw the sign hanging, swinging gently by the breeze. He smiled, just a little and stepped to the door.
