Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: "System Initiation"

Sleep claimed him like a collapse.

Not peaceful. Not comforting. Just exhaustion dragging him under until even fear couldn't keep him awake.

Zen woke with a sharp gasp.

Light stabbed his vision. Sunlight, bright and golden, far harsher than the pale moon from last night. He rolled onto his side, shielding his eyes, body tense.

Before he could think clearly, a voice echoed directly inside his skull:

"System Initiation in progress."

Zen froze.

Cold. Mechanical. Unyielding.

"What—what is this—?!" he whispered, clutching his head.

"Host confirmed. Reincarnation status verified. System binding complete."

A searing pressure spread across his skull, relentless and inescapable. Panic surged.

"Stop it! Make it stop!" he shouted, pressing both hands to his temples. "I can't—!"

The system ignored him.

"Host resistance detected. Override authorized."

Pain exploded through his head. His vision went white, then black, then flashed with shards of information. Symbols, numbers, fragments of data slammed into him faster than he could process.

Zen's scream tore from his throat, raw and desperate.

"Please—stop!"

And still, the system continued.

"Memory Synchronization: Initiated."

Fragments appeared. A name: Zen Lawkey. Age: Fourteen. Status: Orphan. No warmth. No faces. No past. Just cold, factual data.

"That's it…?" he rasped, collapsing to the ground.

"Memory data incomplete. Cause: Host origin mismatch."

Before he could curse again, another surge hit:

"World Knowledge Upload: Commencing."

The realm poured into him: magic, races, laws, histories. Elves, fairies, dwarves, vampires, demons, beast kin, werewolves—all alive, all real.

Information slammed into him until he could barely breathe. He screamed, begged, struggled—but it ended only when the system allowed.

Finally, silence.

Zen lay on the grass, chest heaving, body trembling. Sweat slicked his hair, legs weak. He pushed himself upright, testing the new body. Strong. Balanced. Real.

His shadow stretched across the grass. He focused on it, barely expecting anything.

It twitched.

Rippling. Responding. Alive.

A sharp pulse of pain shot through his chest and head as it snapped back into place. Mana. Shallow, incomplete.

Panting, he closed his eyes.

System… show me my status.

Light bloomed before him.

Zen stared at the panel, still shaking, his head pounding.

The forest felt quiet again. Birds called. Sunlight filtered through the leaves. The world had moved on, indifferent.

Last night, he had chosen to live.

Now, he was awake. A new body. A new world. And a system that wouldn't yield.

He brushed the dew from his clothes, tested his legs. Solid. Functional. Alive.

He glanced at the shadows stretching across the grass, unmoving now. Power waiting.

"…Fine," he muttered quietly, more to himself than anyone else.

A direction appeared in his mind. Silvery Academy. Two years to prepare. A path forward.

Zen pushed himself to his feet. The forest opened before him, sunlight bright, air crisp.

"I'll go to the academy," he said, voice low but steady.
