Chapter 2 - 2-Sundown

Lucas woke up to loud snoring as a small penguin rolled over him, letting out a sigh as he gazed at the sky. A pure blue hue mixed with silky white vanilla clouds all circling to encompass the giant red sun that held it all together in a wonderful canvas.

Though Lucas's eyes stayed on the sun. He swore the sun reminded him of something, but he just couldn't put his finger on it. His eyes started hurting the more she stared, but he couldn't move away, then something changed…

The sky took on a reddish hue as smoke fought the clouds. Something was flowing out of the sun. He didn't know much, but he swore it was copper flowing out, then…then there was a fly and a tentacle fighting the sun, and they weren't losing, and…and…

Lucas's gaze grew dazed as the sun and everything turned back to normal; the sky kept its shades of cerulean blue and feather white clouds aloft around the great red sun as if it was all a memory.

"Coin? What was I thinking about?" Lucas asked as his tiny companion shrugged and sat on his chest. "Probably wasn't all that important anyway", mumbled Lucas as he sat upright, lying on his arms, Coin siding onto his lap.

The only two awake were Coin and Lucas as they both stared at Ruby's sleeping form. "Hey, Coin, is Ruby always this lazy? I mean the sun's already at its peak, and she's still snoozing," asked Lucas as Coin shuffled off his lap and walked to his mother, peaking at her side till she woke.

Flinging the tiny glutton off as she turned and stared at the forest as if it would come out and take her away, the Lucas followed her gaze, finding nothing of note till he noticed a pawprint along with a single chill that ran down his spine as he saw the grass look slightly white as if snow had fallen.

He looked towards Ruby with a questioning look. "What happened?" The bird gave him the dignified answer of yawning and waving her flipper around as if his concern was nothing to worry about. "If you say so," said the Lucas as he stood up, "Coin and I are gonna get some berries, then we'll head deeper into the forest"

Ruby dozed back off to sleep as the duo walked into the forest. Coin took the lead by a few steps, occasionally going further off into the bushes. They talked and walked, though it was more the Lucas talking to himself as the penguin nodded along.

Finding several bushes already plundered for their berries, the duo kept walking till Lucas made a stop along the way, taking a long stick from a tree.

More Coin going further ahead and more empty berry bushes, a small idea came to Lucas as Coin kept going further ahead. That fat little bastard is eating them all! No, no, it could just be a coincidence…oh, who am I kidding, of course he is

As they kept walking, Coin ventured further ahead as always, and lo and behold, the next berry bush they found was suspiciously empty as out of the corner of his eye, he saw Coin lick his beak with his tongue.

Lucas was now regretting letting his small fatty of a bird friend take the lead. "Coin. No touching the next one, you fatass, " scolded Lucas as Coin looked as innocent as he could before giving up and nodding, walking next to Lucas as they kept up the walking.

Their scavenging led them to the river. "Break time?" Both agreed while they knelt at the river's edge, "lemme poke around first", grabbing the stick and tapping at the water's surface, "honestly? No idea what that was supposed to do," said Lucas to none o as he cupped his hands, bringing the water to his lips and slipping.

While he drank slowly, his tiny friend was face-first in the water, gulping as much as he could in his tiny lungs before coming up for breaths. "Slow down or you'll fall in", warned Lucas as the penguin leaned further and further into the river.

Coin replied by shrugging off the warning and falling into the water, leading to Lucas letting out a chuckle as he reached for his friend, pulling him out, which led Lucas's chuckle to turn to a small laugh at the sight of Coin hiding his face behind his flippers.

"I'd make fun of you but…you already look like the wind got beat out of yo,,u" said the Lucas with a tame smile and amused tone as he let down ,Coin who ran back off into the forest, the Lucas following soon after as they both looked for another bush.

Finally, after all their walking they come on an untouched bush and collected their breakfast, pocketing most of the berries, carrying a few in his hand as snacks, popping a glowing cyan berry into his mouth, the taste reminded him of an orange, the first time he tried one, he was hoping for blueberries.

On the bright side, they tasted pretty good all things considered, he even felt stronger the more he ate, only feeling a tiny bit woozy. Though he was wondering if eating them was a good idea, they were glowing a lot, plus the other berries they've eaten were just grape colour, he did as the grape coloured a little less now that he had other berries, the woozy feeling was now less tiny and more roaring, maybe another berry would fix it.

Though only two kinds probably weren't enough to entirely change his sense of flavour, one of them had to be tastier and the tastier one is probably the more dangerous one unless tested which Lucas hadn't done. . . .

Letting out an unfathomable sigh of despair as he looked at Coin, "Buddy, we might be dead in…uhh", mumbled Lucas, racking through his mind as he tried for examples but his mind turned up blanks. "Well, ages ago, someone told me a poisonous berry could kill you in a…hour or two? And considering we ate more than a single berry. Coin. I think we're dead," said Lucas with as much honesty as he could muster.

Which wasn't much but Coin got the idea. Panicic soon set into the tiny penguin as he ran around, which looked adorable despite the situation. Lucas looked up at the sky, confusion marking his face. The moon was nearing its zenith.

Coin continued running around as Lucas kept staring, the woozy feeling had come in full force, and he felt sick. Time has moved, and he didn't know how. He looked down at his hands. The berry juice was glowing its brightest hue as the moon reached its peak.

"What th-" gravity cut off Lucas as he fell to the ground. Coin followed suit. He was weak; he couldn't lift a finger and the dark started spreading all around him.

The last thing he heard was the sound of a cat's steps, along with someone's voice muttering as the dark fully took his sight.

Taia

"For god's sake, kid," muttered the cloaked woman as she poured a flask of golden radiant liquid down his throat, making sure he swallowed it all properly. Taia turned to the small penguin at Lucas's side, Pero looked ever so hungry, but she couldn't let her favourite little tiny cat eat the bird.

It clearly meant something to the idiot ,kid and she would- ha. never thought she'd get to call anything related to Wright an idiot. Though Freya had earned several hidden curses, which reminded Taia.

She should probably ask why he's all the way out here and not with his pesky mother. No, probably something bad for him to end up here, wouldn't want to remind the kid of something traumatic. Though she was gonna ask why he thought he just ate moon berries.

Pouring the last of the golden liquor in the beak of the penguin, she stood up,glaring at the moon. She had enough of the moon and its trick, but no matter how long she glared she couldn't hate the moon. All of her best moments were under it. "Still a pain," mumbled Taia as she waited.

Taila sat waiting for Lucas to wake. She stared at his sleeping face, vulnerable and peaceful all the same. "Why must you look like your wolf of a mother, be a fox like your father. Would that be so hard?" Said Taia as Pero came to her side.

"See something?" Asked Taia as Pero gestured to the forest, though she heard it before anything else. The cool, wooshing sound of ice and the mist that accompanied it ran closer and closer to where she and Lucas were.

"Pero, distract her for a little while. I should be done by sunrise" said the woman as her faithful servant ran along its way. Losing her body as it descended to the smoky ness of shadow.

"Now then, what to do with the kid, hmmm…god's I should've thought this through" complained Taia as she practiced sitting while Luca slept, mumbling about remaining mysterious and eccentric.
