I just kept going.
Light. I saw light up ahead faint, yellow, but real.
Freedom.
I was almost there.
Then a gunshot cracked behind me.
The sound tore through the air, echoing down the hallway.
I froze for half a second. My breath hitched, and I ducked instinctively, pressing my back to the wall.
Another shout. "She's heading for the exit!"
I ran again. Harder this time. My lungs burned. My head throbbed. But I didn't care.
I didn't even know if I was crying until I tasted salt on my lips.
All I knew was….. I had to keep moving, I just had to.
The cold night air bit into my lungs as I ran. My bare feet slapped against concrete, the sound echoing in the empty alley. I didn't know where I was…..somewhere industrial, maybe near the docks but I kept moving. My wedding dress, now torn and filthy, clung to my skin, heavy and wet and fear.
