Chapter 209: Finite Incantatem
Madam Hooch stood in the centre of the Quidditch pitch, nodding approvingly as Sean approached.
"Captains, shake hands," she called out. Cedric Diggory and Acting Captain Roger Davies stepped forward.
The Quidditch match started fast and ended even faster.
While the crowd was still immersed in the electrifying atmosphere, Sean streaked across the sky like a meteor.
Armed with the finest broomstick and flying skills honed to the limit of [Expert] proficiency, Sean left everyone in his dust. In just three minutes, he was alone, closing in on the Golden Snitch.
Once his feet left the ground, only magical intuition, sharpened by constant practice, occupied his mind.
His formidable willpower allowed him to master the alchemical object to an extremely high level, another reason he caught the Snitch in a mere five minutes.
"We won! It's Sean! Oh my god—Terry!" In the stands, Michael hugged Terry in excitement.
"We are the best Quidditch team!" Roger roared on the pitch.
The Ravenclaw players huddled around Sean.
"To the wind and eagle wings that soar forever in the high skies!"
And so, the Quidditch match concluded.
Before leaving the pitch, Roger hesitantly asked Sean, "I know your heart isn't in this, but just once, one last time, let's win that bloody Quidditch Cup together! This is the best chance we've had in seven years! Ravenclaw will win the House Cup!"
Quidditch was relaxing. While flying, Sean's mind went completely blank. But relaxing things were destined not to point directly to the greatness of magic.
Remembering his promise to the prefect, Sean nodded and bid farewell to Acting Captain Roger.
"Wonderful, child!" Professor McGonagall hurried down from the stands, followed by a faintly irate Professor Snape.
In the days that followed, Professor Snape seemed to carry a simmering anger.
His instructions were often laced with comments like: "What, our Mr. Green, did the Golden Snitch not inform you of the necessary stirring force for the Shrinking Solution?"
"Of course, Mr. Green, savagery has occupied your brain, so you forgot that heat control requires the utmost caution."
Professor McGonagall, however, became even kinder.
During breaks, she would unconsciously share stories of past Quidditch matches with Sean.
In this relaxed state, Sean became more proficient in constructing magical circuits for Transfiguration.
Time flowed slowly.
Sean's plans remained unchanged.
His Transfiguration proficiency drew closer to [Master] with each passing day. Sean was incredibly curious about the landscape beyond Master level.
He had mastered several types of advanced Transfiguration:
"Object to Magic" Transfiguration was his most proficient area. Following that was Multi-Transfiguration, which increased the intensity and complexity of the spells. He was also learning "Self to Living Creature" Transfiguration step by step... As for the other vast domains of Transfiguration, he felt he simply didn't have enough energy.
In a week, he had constructed the magical circuit for the stone gargoyle and could summon a small one without becoming completely exhausted.
He increasingly felt that the function of the magical circuit was to reduce the energy and willpower consumption of Transfiguration, and the path to perfecting these circuits was nearly endless.
No wonder wizards became more powerful the more proficient they were in Transfiguration; it was a magical branch that allowed for limitless accumulation.
After the Quidditch match, Sean's reputation in Ravenclaw visibly soared.
Led by Michael, the young eagles spread exaggerated rumours about Sean.
The most outrageous one was: "Oh, Sean, of course. If you knew he could beat Headmaster Dumbledore in his youth, then everything makes sense."
In the Great Hall, even Neville believed Sean would become the next Dumbledore.
A certain sweet-loving Headmaster watched with interest, a slightly stunned expression appearing when he recalled something.
...This child truly does perform better in some aspects than I did in my youth.
Regardless of the rumours swirling outside, Sean continued to study magic at his own pace.
Thanks to his daily "territory patrols" in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid, his affinity with the Thestrals was nearing the threshold for creating a Magical Creature Biscuit.
Meanwhile, after a period of training, the students in the Room of Hope had Justin bring an interesting piece of news.
"We're all learning the Counter-Spell; it's a practical and efficient magic..." Justin said, entering the Room of Hope amidst Mr. Owler's noise. "By chance, Hermione found it in The Standard Book of Spells. It's so similar to the General Counter-Spell that learning it wasn't difficult for us..."
Sean didn't quite understand what Justin was referring to until he saw Hermione and the others excitedly point their wands downward.
He understood immediately. After all—wand up, Protego Maxima; wand down, Finite.
Finite (the General Counter-Spell) was a group counter-charm requiring multiple wizards to cast together to lift large-scale magical effects.
Its mechanism was similar to the single-target Finite Incantatem, but the scale was larger. It could lift most conventional spells, though it was ineffective against powerful curses like Avada Kedavra.
When facing an enemy together, it would be extremely useful.
For example, when Gellert Grindelwald unleashed blue fire in an attempt to destroy Paris, the local wizards collectively cast Finite to successfully stop the disaster.
"Come on! Sean, I think we can definitely cast it!" Hermione whispered excitedly.
Her desk was covered with books like The Standard Book of Spells, Basic Hexes for the Busy and Vexed, and Jinxes for the Defence Against the Dark Arts. With such extensive study, it wasn't hard to understand how she found interesting spells.
Professor Flitwick, passing by, was happy to help the students test it. So—
"Impedimenta!" Professor Flitwick waved his wand.
"Finite!"
The wizards of the Room of Hope stood in a line centered on Sean.
They pointed their wands downward. A golden-red light joined at the tips of their wands, actually neutralizing Professor Flitwick's Impediment Jinx.
"Very good! Children! That was excellent!" Professor Flitwick applauded.
In the Room of Hope, everyone fell into an excited silence. They wanted to say something, but words failed them.
Harry and Ron couldn't believe they could hold their own against a professor one day. Justin was overjoyed—they seemed to have stumbled upon something incredible.
As for Sean, he heard the Panel's voice:
[You have practiced the Finite spell to the Adept standard. Proficiency +30]
In the instant they cast the spell together, they had temporarily reached a level in counter-spelling where they could trade a blow with a professor.
