Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

Chapter 10: That's Okay, Be Careful Next Time

Clearly, this woman was one of Resident Evil's many goddesses, and also the earliest female protagonist of the Resident Evil game series—Jill Valentine.

Turning off the lights and TV, with a THUD of the door closing, the residential house fell into darkness. Jill swayed her graceful figure as she headed into the distance.

...

Night. Black Gate Bridge.

The bridge that Umbrella Corporation had spent a fortune to build.

And now, in the middle of that bridge, a seven-to-eight-meter-high wall towered.

The wall used the bridge as its axis of symmetry, extending dozens of meters across the river surface on both sides. Combined with snipers and helicopters, it completely eliminated any possibility of privately escaping the city by boat.

Supervisor Cain, wearing a Bluetooth earpiece, stood atop the wall, gazing coolly at the surging crowd below—like a haughty plantation owner viewing a group of insignificant slaves.

Suddenly, an older man in the crowd convulsed and collapsed to the ground. Beside him, his daughter anxiously tried to approach, but was held back by Sergeant Peyton, who'd come to maintain order.

Peyton patted his chest: "Don't worry. I've got this."

Just then, the man stopped trembling and opened his eyes. His pupils showed not a trace of black.

He reached out both hands, gripping Peyton's calf tightly, opened his mouth wide, and bit down viciously.

Peyton only felt his leg seized, no time to react. But at this critical moment, a leg in red tights kicked hard, hitting the man's stomach and sending him sprawling to the side.

A broad hand patted Peyton's shoulder. He turned to see a man in a red and black mask.

Deadpool gave a thumbs up, pointing to himself: "Don't worry. I've got this."

Peyton: ???

"Cover her eyes."

After the warning, Deadpool stepped forward two paces, lifted his foot, and stomped hard on the struggling man's head as he tried to stand. His foot sank deep into the skull. Instantly, red and white spilled everywhere.

But at that same moment, BANG—a gunshot rang out. The man's skull exploded in a spray of blood, along with a sharp pain in Deadpool's foot.

"Hsss~"

Deadpool's eyes widened in shock as he looked at the officer who'd fired. His confusion was so thick it transmitted through the mask to everyone present.

If you were going to shoot, why didn't you shoot earlier?

If you weren't going to shoot, why shoot now?

"I... I... I'm very sorry."

The officer's lips trembled. After stammering for a while, he only managed those words.

"That's okay. Be careful next time."

Though his face was hidden by the mask and no one could see it anyway, Deadpool still tried hard to squeeze out a smile, forcefully pulling his large foot from the man's skull.

A zombie appearing in the crowd naturally caused some commotion. At that moment, Jill also arrived. Seeing this scene, she rushed to Peyton's side.

She and Peyton were both STARS members who'd worked in the same department, so they were quite familiar with each other.

"Peyton."

"Jill."

After greeting each other, Peyton supported Deadpool—who was holding one leg, performing a flamingo stand—with a guilty expression.

No matter what, Deadpool had ended up like this trying to save him.

Atop the wall, Cain saw the chaotic crowd, raised an eyebrow, pressed his earpiece, and issued an order in a cold tone: "Close the gate. Stop the evacuation."

"But our people are still inside."

The officer-looking man beside him heard this order, his eyes widening in disbelief as he stared at Cain.

Cain paid no attention: "I said close it!"

The gate slowly closed. Everyone stared at this scene in shock. The next moment, they desperately pushed toward the exit.

BANG!

Seeing a riot about to form, Cain didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired into the sky: "You have five seconds to turn back."

"This guy really knows how to play the villain. What do you say—should I pop him right now?"

Deadpool, clutching his foot, looked at Cain on the wall. He suddenly felt his trigger finger itching, getting a bit restless.

At this distance, no bragging—he could blow Cain's big head off with his eyes closed.

Hearing this, Jill was somewhat tempted.

At this distance, she had a hundred percent certainty as well. But then she shook her head, her hand pressing on Deadpool's shoulder, stopping his next move: "No. If we kill him, it might trigger the soldiers to riot. If they open fire indiscriminately on civilians, the consequences would be even worse."

"Fine. Your rack is bigger, you're right."

Hearing this, Deadpool thought it made sense. He temporarily shelved the idea and continued holding his foot.

Jill: ???

Hearing the gunshot, the crowd froze for a moment, then erupted into even greater chaos. But no one dared keep pushing forward.

Seeing this, Cain nodded with satisfaction and said to the officer beside him: "Speed it up."

The officer understood. After a moment's internal struggle, he was ultimately persuaded by cold hard cash. He pressed his earpiece and ordered: "Authorization from above. You are permitted to use weapons to disperse the crowd."

Hearing this, the soldiers on the wall all raised their rifles, pulling bolts. Their movements were perfectly synchronized.

"Don't be afraid! They can't possibly shoot at civilians!"

In the crowd, reporter Terri held up her beloved little DV camera, filming this scene while shouting.

This woman—you could say she was brave, and she really was. The soldiers had chambered rounds and were aiming, yet she still dared push to the very front.

But you could also say she was cowardly. Her little feet shuffled and shuffled until she'd somehow shuffled behind the golden triangle of Peyton, Deadpool, and Jill.

"Five."

The commander began counting down.

"Four."

At this point, some prescient people turned and surged backward. But more people just stood in place, at a loss.

"Three."

"Go back! Get back quick!"

Jill knew Umbrella was playing for keeps. She turned and shouted.

But her shout seemed so powerless in this dense sea of humanity.

"Two. One. Open fire!"

With the commander's order, the soldiers decisively pulled their triggers. However, they weren't quite insane enough to actually shoot at the citizens—instead, they lowered their gun barrels, spraying the empty ground in front.

The dense gunfire finally made everyone on the bridge recognize reality. Then an even greater riot erupted in the crowd. Everyone frantically turned to push backward, afraid that being one second slower would mean bullets raining on their heads.

In the chaos, crowding and trampling claimed countless lives. Screams and wails rose and fell, yet few could stop to offer help.

The three didn't rush to evacuate. They knew that as long as the main group retreated, the soldiers had no reason to keep firing.

Jill and Peyton supported the "injured" Deadpool at the back of the pack, with the overly familiar Terri mixed in beside them.

...

Back on the street, the crowd scattered in all directions. This area connected to the bridge hadn't suffered large-scale infection yet. With the soldiers' cleanup, there were temporarily no zombies in sight.

Of course, that was only temporary.

"How can they do this? We're citizens! Taxpayers!"
