Ficool

The First Glitch

----- Prologue -----

This is officially the weirdest Tuesday ever. A slime just waved at me like it was my best friend.

I put on my CPR gear, expecting a cinematic, epic fantasy adventure.

For the record, this CPR is Completely Personalized Reality. Not the kind where you revive someone who probably drowned.

It plugs straight into your senses, so I can feel the breeze brushing past my face, the weight of my sword in my hands, even the tingle when touching objects. Most people do not last more than an hour in it. Me? I dive in headfirst.

Eh!

I stared at the game world. Slimes waved. Mushrooms glowed. One tree literally rolled its eyes.

A treasure chest hopped away as if it had legs. I swung my sword through a slime and it bounced harmlessly off the floor.

"Uh…are you lagging?" a voice called.

I glanced over. Some other player in sparkly armor was struggling to push a rolling boulder toward a quest objective. He frowned at me.

"That flicker—are you…glitching?"

I waved awkwardly.

"Uh…lag, probably."

I tried to restart the quest, hoping for something serious, something epic, something that felt like the trailers promised. No luck.

Etherissia was trashy. Cartoonish. Cute, sure. Deadly, sure. But still ridiculous.

I shouted, hoping those shitty developers could hear my plea.

"Can't you make this game a little more challenging?!"

According to the internet, the first person to clear it gets a huge sum of money.

But still, why do I even play this game?

What a clever way to market some trashy game.

Then it happened.

A tear opened in the sky. Bright colors twisted into black streaks. Sounds warped into shrieks. The rift was huge. Visible from everywhere.

[Critical Glitch Detected. World Stability Compromised]

Etherissia changed before my eyes. The childish, silly fantasy world warped into something darker.

Shadows stretched unnaturally. Monsters looked sharper, faster, and deadlier. The sun dimmed.

[Death Mode Activated. No Respawn. Permanent Avatar Consequences]

Players began to vanish mid-quest. The logout button was gone. Everyone was trapped.

I froze. My heartbeat skipped. This was not supposed to happen.

And yet, here I was. The only one laughing.

Damn it. What have I done!
