I lifted my eyes slowly, dread and fragile hope pulling at me from opposite directions.


Cassian leaned forward slightly, elbows on the table, gaze fixed entirely on me.


"Tell me more," he said. "About the Kleins, every single thing you know about them. And what do you think could have caused him to lose his job?"


And then I let my mind drift back to the Kleins, everything, every conversation and then I remembered.


My corridor and hallway suddenly felt very strange to me after the conversation with Celine.


The air inside felt heavier, denser and suffocating. Why did she have such an effect on me? And yet there's this gnawing feeling that this was wrong, but I wanted her every day, and strangely, I wanted to own her tears and her laughter.
