Ren's lungs burned with every inhale. The bond with the silver-haired girl still pulsed through him, a strange warmth radiating from his chest as if tethering him to her energy. Yet the shadow looming above them did not waver. Its eyes—two burning coals—hovered in the violet sky, surveying them with calculated malice.
"Ren… hold steady," the girl said, her voice calm but urgent. "It's testing us."
Ren clenched his fists. His mind raced. "Testing…? What do you mean?"
Before she could answer, the shadow descended, its form coalescing into a monstrous figure—a humanoid silhouette wrapped in writhing black mist, with jagged wings stretching wide enough to blot out the dim sun. Its voice, when it spoke, rumbled like the cracking of mountains.
"You are not of this world, yet you draw power. That cannot be tolerated."
Ren's pulse skyrocketed. The creature moved faster than his eyes could follow, slashing through the mist toward them. He reacted instinctively, channeling the Soul Bond energy he had barely begun to understand. A shimmering barrier of intertwined light erupted around him and the silver-haired girl. The impact threw them backward, gouging a trench in the stone beneath their feet.
"This is… insane," Ren muttered, staggering to his feet.
"You can do this!" she shouted, her hand gripping his. "Trust the bond!"
Ren nodded, summoning every ounce of courage. A surge of light exploded from his chest, forming a blade of pure energy in his hand. He swung, and the blade met the creature's mist-wrapped claws. Sparks erupted, and the force of the clash pushed them both backward.
The girl moved fluidly beside him, her own weapon materializing—an elegant spear of starlight. Together, their attacks coordinated, dancing in perfect synchronicity. The creature roared, staggered, but it adapted. Its wings whipped violently, sending gusts that tore at Ren's clothes and hair.
"You're stronger than I imagined," the silver-haired girl murmured, eyes sharp. "But you need more control!"
Ren's heart thudded. Every attack he unleashed drained him, yet every strike against the shadow creature strengthened the bond. His mind raced: he needed to fight, to survive, but he barely understood the rules of this world.
Suddenly, a second figure appeared from the mist—a young man, muscular and agile, with dark hair and a calm, commanding presence. He moved with deadly precision, cutting through minor shadow minions that had begun to swarm around them.
"Who…?" Ren gasped.
"Another summon," the silver-haired girl said quietly. "Or perhaps… a hunter. Either way, he can help—but we must act carefully."
The newcomer nodded at them and leapt into the fray. His attacks were ruthless, efficient, and precise. Ren watched in awe as the three of them coordinated instinctively, their combined Soul Bonds creating dazzling bursts of light and force that tore through the shadowy creatures.
Yet the main shadow—bigger, older, infinitely more dangerous—hovered above, observing, calculating. Its next movement came without warning. It dove straight for Ren. Time slowed. Every instinct screamed dodge, but even as he moved, its claws grazed him, cutting deep into his arm. Pain lanced through him, but the Soul Bond flared, enveloping his wound in healing energy.
"You're holding back!" the silver-haired girl shouted. "You must fight with everything you have!"
Ren gritted his teeth. With a roar, he poured every ounce of his fear, anger, and confusion into the blade of light he wielded. He struck the shadow creature with unrelenting force, and for the first time, it faltered.
A brilliant explosion of light engulfed the area. When Ren's vision cleared, the creature had retreated, leaving a gaping crater behind. Yet the lingering darkness hinted that it was far from defeated.
The newcomer approached Ren, extending a hand. "You have power… unusual power. Control it, or it will control you."
Ren nodded, still panting. "I—I will. But what… what is this world?"
The silver-haired girl's expression darkened. "A world of trials, Ren. And the shadows you just fought are only the beginning. There are entities far older, far crueler, watching your every move. Survive, and you may uncover your destiny. Fail… and you will be consumed."
Ren's chest tightened. He glanced at the newcomer, then at the girl beside him. His mind raced with questions, fear, and determination. Yet amidst the terror, a strange warmth settled within him—the beginnings of friendship, trust, and… something else he could not yet name.
From the crater where the shadow had vanished, a faint whisper echoed:
"Ren… your awakening has drawn the attention of forces you cannot yet comprehend. Prepare… or perish."
Ren's eyes widened. The whisper was not carried by the wind. It was in his mind.
And somewhere deep in the violet sky, the shadow stirred again.
