Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Academy of Chaos: Enrollment Day

The morning sun stretched its golden fingers across the spires of the Royal Academy of Magic. Mana currents shimmered in the air, and apprentices scurried through the courtyard, clutching scrolls, wands, and enchanted snacks that occasionally rebelled. It was a perfect day for chaos.

Lucien strolled lazily through the gates, Rorio trotting beside him with a tail wagging fast enough to stir minor gusts of wind.

"Master," Rorio said, tilting his head. "Do we have to do introductions today? Can't we just… observe? They're cute, yes, but mortals can be exhausting."

Lucien yawned. "Observation is boring. Besides, chaos prefers participation. Look lively." He stretched dramatically, black hair glinting in the sunlight. "Today, we become students of the Academy. Not officially, of course, but technically. And technically, chaos has no rules."

Rorio barked in agreement. "Technically. Also snacks."

Across the courtyard, familiar faces froze. Kellen was already juggling a stack of scrolls nervously, while Myra hovered slightly above the ground, trying not to wobble too violently with her beginner levitation. Aria was leaning casually against a fountain, her fiery red hair catching the sunlight, eyes sharp, watching Lucien approach.

"Finally," Aria muttered under her breath. "I thought he'd stroll in fashionably late."

Lucien gave a theatrical wave. "Greetings, dear students! Your humble classmates have arrived!"

Rorio barked. "Lies. We're here to teach."

Kellen flinched. "Did… did the dog just talk?"

"Yes," Rorio replied, tilting his head. "And no, you don't get a refund on the lessons. Welcome to the chaos curriculum."

Aria smirked faintly. "I see your 'lessons' come with sarcasm and threats of existential crises. Lovely."

Lucien grinned. "Exactly. Consider it extra credit. Now, let's meet your first teachers."

Registration was a formality. Lucien filled out forms in seconds, Rorio adding occasional comments about the inadequacy of mortal bureaucracy. By the time they approached the main courtyard, chaos was already bubbling. A water elemental summoned by Kellen morphed mid-air into a tap-dancing jellyfish, while Myra hovered dangerously high, struggling to maintain control.

Lucien clapped once. "Beautiful. Such raw talent… and such spectacular misuse of it. Keep going. I enjoy a good show."

Rorio wagged his tail, generating a small gust that nearly knocked over a few younger students. "You heard him. Chaos is mandatory. Fun is optional but strongly recommended."

Aria's flames flickered in amusement and mild irritation. "I swear, if he touches my mana…"

Lucien raised an eyebrow. "Touch it? I was considering a gentle nudge. Nothing more."

By midday, students were sorted into their initial realms: Beginner, Adept, Skilled. Lucien and Rorio, naturally, bypassed these mortal limitations.

"Beginner Realm," Lucien mused. "Perfect for planting seeds of chaos. Small, harmless panic. Subtle lessons disguised as disasters."

Kellen's tap-dancing jellyfish summoned a second, slightly larger one, boosting him to Adept I. He blinked, uncertain if he should feel proud or terrified.

Myra's levitation instability resonated with ambient mana, leveling her also to Adept I. She floated down slowly, glancing at Lucien with a mixture of confusion and gratitude.

Aria, adjusting her flame discipline, accidentally triggered a minor mana explosion that boosted her to Adept II. She crossed her arms but couldn't hide a small smirk. "I knew today would be… interesting."

Lucien leaned back, satisfied. "Progress. Beautiful, chaotic, and entirely unexpected."

Rorio barked. "Mostly accidental, but I approve."

As the afternoon sun warmed the courtyard, Lucien decided it was time for a first bonding exercise.

"Students," he announced, voice carrying just enough authority to command attention without being entirely serious, "today you shall face the Trial of Alignment. Four elements. One obstacle. Minor chance of complete humiliation. Major chance of… fun."

Aria groaned. "Minor chance? Really?"

Lucien snapped his fingers. "Minor for mortals. Major for chaos enthusiasts. You'll see soon enough."

Rorio yipped excitedly. "And snacks afterward! Maybe."

The students exchanged wary glances. The already awkward hierarchy between Aria, Kellen, and Myra had shifted subtly. Aria's smirk softened slightly as she watched Lucien. Kellen, though anxious, started to see Lucien as both a mentor and a challenge. Myra's admiration grew as she realized the chaotic teacher was also a guide.

Lucien and Rorio began demonstrating the trial. Lucien's casual flick of a finger conjured a small elemental obstacle course. Rorio, floating slightly above the ground, barked instructions.

Kellen tried water manipulation, accidentally flooding half the courtyard. Lucien clapped slowly. "Excellent. Overkill is a skill."

Myra floated gracefully, though still unstable. Lucien whispered a minor probability tweak, stabilizing her flight. She landed gently, eyes wide. "Thank you…"

Aria, amused, crafted a flame bridge to cross a chasm of fire elementals. Lucien leaned on a nearby pillar, sipping thin air tea. "Innovation. Bold, fiery, slightly reckless. I approve."

Rorio barked. "And stylish. Can I get that bridge pattern for my next game of tail-chase?"

The trial wasn't just about magic—it was a subtle lesson in cooperation, improvisation, and trust. Even as chaos erupted, the trio found themselves instinctively watching each other, covering mistakes, and laughing at accidents.

By the end of the day, the Beginner Realm students had improved, leveling some to Adept II, and forming bonds stronger than mere classroom familiarity. Aria, Kellen, and Myra now had a shared sense of camaraderie, forged in minor explosions, accidental elemental attacks, and Rorio's relentless sarcasm.

Lucien leaned on the balcony overlooking the courtyard, hands behind his head. "Beginner Realm today… Adept tomorrow. Skilled next week. And then…" He grinned, black hair glinting like the void itself. "We climb higher and higher. Chaos, growth, destiny, snacks."

Rorio rolled onto his back, tail thumping happily. "I like climbing. And chaos. And snacks. Mostly in that order."

Lucien laughed. "Perfect. Then we are of one mind, my faithful companion. One mind, one tail, one destiny."

As the sun set, the Academy's courtyard glimmered with mana residue, minor elemental explosions, and laughter. For the students, it was terrifying, exhilarating, and unforgettable. For Lucien and Rorio, it was merely the beginning of hundreds of chapters of adventures, lessons, and chaos in a world ripe for magic, mischief, and marvels.
