Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: Overdoing the Act

While Shirō Emiya was deep in thought, questioning whether he was the "dominant" or "submissive" type in life...

His father came looking for him.

"Shirō, you're already in your sixth year now, and your performance in the academy has been solid. Although you still don't have a Zanpakutō, there's no need to rush it," his father said calmly.

"Once you graduate, you'll be entering the Second Division's Courier Corps, preparing to take over my position. So, there are some things you should start learning ahead of time."

"Yes, Father" Shirō nodded. Learning more was always a good thing. At this point, the academy was starting to feel stale and boring anyway.

"So, Shirō, tell me, what's the most important quality for the Courier Corps?"

Shirō thought for a moment.

"Memory?" he offered.

Well, it was their job to deliver orders. If you messed up the message, what was the point? Plus, you had to remember locations and people, imagine getting lost on the way to deliver something important!

"That's true," his father said. "Memory is important, but it's considered a basic skill. What else?"

"Loyalty!" Shirō replied. Many messages were classified. If a courier got caught, they had to bite their tongue, betraying the Soul Society wasn't an option.

"Also important, but again, a basic trait every Shinigami should have. I mean the core requirement. What do you think is the defining skill for the Courier Corps?"

Shirō thought a little more, then answered with certainty:

"Speed"

"Exactly." His father nodded in satisfaction. "The orders we deliver are urgent. If they weren't, Hell Butterflies would do the job. So when they call us, it means something needs to be delivered faster than anything else in the Seireitei."

"I've been working on my Shunpo regularly" Shirō replied.

"I know. At your current level, you could easily qualify for the team. But... there are special cases where speed alone isn't enough," his father said seriously.

"What else is needed?" Shirō asked curiously.

"Kido."

"Kido?"

"Yes," his father explained. "Certain Kido are used specifically for communication and tracking. For instance, if you need to deliver an order to a captain whose position is constantly changing during battle, you can use Bakudō #58: Kakushitsuijaku to trace their spiritual pressure and find them."

"Ohhh, I see," Shirō nodded.

"And then there's Bakudō #77: Tenteikūra, used in emergency broadcasts when individual messages aren't fast enough. Of course, that one isn't foolproof either."

Shirō knew of Tenteikūra, it was basically like sending a mass group message. But the problem was: you couldn't confirm if the recipient heard, understood, or had follow-up questions. Hence why the Courier Corps could never be fully replaced.

With that knowledge, Shirō began practicing the special-purpose Kido his father taught him.

In the courtyard, he sipped a little sake, he was allowed to drink openly now. His grades were good, his relationship with Yoruichi was stable, and the family had stopped fussing over his personal life.

He set down the cup and struck a cool pose.

"Behold, a demonstration of advanced Kido by your master!" he announced to his longtime maid.

"Yay! Go, young master!" she clapped with stars in her eyes.

Shirō tossed off his outer coat, assumed a horse stance, raised his hands dramatically,

"Bakudō #77: Tenteikūra!"

"Woooooow~~" The maid was stunned. Casting a level 77 spell without an incantation? Her young master was amazing!

Now, how to cast Kido quickly? Simple: skip the incantation!

Tenteikūra was notoriously difficult because of the mental strain required to filter recipients. It involved weaving your spiritual pressure into a net and selecting only relevant people to send the message to.

The lazy workaround? Don't filter anyone, blast it out to everyone.

But that cost a ton of energy, and not everyone had the spiritual reserves to do it.

Shirō had figured out a hack:

< Reduce the recipient count: fewer people = less energy.

< Skip the filtering logic entirely.

< Let the spell select the strongest spiritual pressures nearby, whoever gets caught, gets caught!

He barely knew any of the captains anyway. This was just trial and error.

In his mind, it was harmless. After all, captains were free, right? They didn't have that much work to do. Surely helping him practice wasn't a big ask?

And so... the chaos began.

All across the Seireitei, captains stopped in their tracks as a strange broadcast entered their minds.

Was something serious happening in Soul Society?

Why use mass communication like this instead of direct contact?

And... whose spiritual pressure was this?

Then came the message:

"Moshi moshi~ Squeeee, mmm, screech, uh-oh!

Black and white net, bridge of twenty-two, sixty-six crowns, footfalls, distant thunder, jagged peaks, returning earth, night watch, sea of clouds, azure battalion, paint the grand garden and soar to the heavens, !"

...

These were all captains. Centuries-old souls. And yet, they all wore the exact same blank, #_# face.

Seriously?! A full chant?!

For a Tenteikūra?!

Did this brat not realize they were very important people with millions of responsibilities?

Those who knew Shirō, like Ukitake and Unohana, immediately sighed.

Yep. Definitely Shirō's doing.
