Yu Xi froze. The suddenness of it stole his breath. Jian Ci hadn't made a sound. There were no sounds of footsteps or a shift in the air.
One moment, the space behind him had been empty. The next, it was filled with a presence so overwhelming it felt like gravity had changed direction.
They were the same height, but in that moment, Yu Xi felt like a child staring up at a god of ruin.
Jian Ci's eyes were souless and vacant, devoid of recognition. There were no emotion in them. Just the cold, endless hunger of something that had forgotten what it meant to be human.
Yu Xi made his move. The injector jabbed into Jian Ci's thigh with a hiss.
