Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE: THE VANISHING

Ava stood before the worn signage, its faded letters creaking in the wind: Welcome to Evermore. The words echoed in her mind like a haunting whisper. A shiver coursed down her spine as the town's eerie silence enveloped her.

Twelve years had passed since she fled Evermore, scarred by the trauma of her parents' disappearance. The memories still lingered, etched into her mind like a morbid tattoo. Yet, she had returned, driven by a burning need for answers.

As a journalist, Ava had investigated countless cases, but none touched her heart like the mysterious vanishings in Evermore. The recent string of disappearances had awakened her own demons, and she knew she had to confront them.

With a resolute breath, Ava stepped into the town, her camera clutched tightly against her chest. The familiar streets seemed to writhe and twist, like a living entity. She checked into the town motel, booking a room for a month. The proprietor, Mrs. Jethro, eyed her warily.

"You're back," Mrs. Jethro said, her voice dripping with an unsettling warmth.

Ava forced a smile. "Just here for a story."

As she settled into her room, Ava's hands trembled while unpacking her clothes. Suddenly, a voice pierced the air:

"Welcome home, Ava. We knew you couldn't stay away."

Startled, Ava spun around, but the room was empty. The voice seemed to emanate from everywhere and nowhere.

Her heart racing, Ava approached the door, hesitating before turning the handle. The hallway stretched out, deserted and silent.

"Who's there?" Ava called out, her voice barely above a whisper.

The only response was the creaking of the old motel, its wooden bones seeming to shift and sigh.

Ava's grip on her camera tightened. She knew she had to face her past, but Evermore's sinister presence already had her questioning her resolve.

Was she prepared to confront the darkness that had haunted her for so long?

As night descended, Ava's room grew darker, the shadows twisting into menacing forms. She knew she wasn't alone in Evermore.

The town was watching her.

Detective Jameson stood at the edge of town, gazing out at the dense forest that seemed to swallow Evermore whole. The mist-shrouded trees loomed like sentinels, guarding secrets that only the wind knew.

"Another one gone," Jameson muttered to himself, his voice barely audible over the rustling leaves.

Emily Wilson, 17, had vanished into thin air. Her parents claimed she'd gone to bed, but woke up to an empty room. The window was open, the curtains billowing like a ghostly sigh.

Jameson's gut told him this was no ordinary disappearance. Emily was the fifth person to vanish in three months. The pattern was eerily familiar: young, bright, and promising.

What linked them?

Education?

Social status?

Or something more sinister?

As he turned to leave, a chill crawled up his spine. On the tree nearest Emily's house, a symbol was carved:

Ɛ

The same symbol found at each disappearance site.

"What are you trying to tell me?" Jameson whispered to the wind.

Suddenly, his phone rang, shrill in the silence.

"Detective Jameson, we've got another one."

Jameson's heart sank.

"Who?"

"Sarah Lee. She was seen walking home from the library... and then she wasn't."

The darkness closed in around Jameson like a noose.

Evermore was devouring its own.

Jameson's mind raced:

Was it a serial killer?

A cult?

Or something supernatural?

He knew Ava Moreno, a journalist, was arriving in town today. Her parents had disappeared under similar circumstances years ago.

Perhaps she held the key.

As Jameson rushed to Sarah's last known location, the symbol seemed to sear itself into his mind.

Ɛ

Evermore's sinister presence whispered:

You'll never uncover the truth.
