The cave's air was cold and heavy, yet Raven sat like a monarch on his stone throne, one leg crossed, his sharp eyes gleaming in the faint glow of torchlight.
Vee floated beside him, twirling lazily in the air, her holographic hair swaying with each flick of light. "So, boss~ what's the grand plan now? You've got your first follower, a secret base, and the villagers whisper your name with a mix of awe and fear. What's next?"
Raven's gaze sharpened. "Masks."
"Hmm?"
He leaned forward, voice low and calm. "We need two faces. The shadow—feared by those in power. And the savior—adored by the common people. To rule, I must be both."
Vee blinked, then smirked. "You're not just aiming to be a villain. You're planning to build a legend."
Raven's lips curled. "Legends control hearts. Fear controls obedience. Combine both, and no one escapes your grasp."
---
Kain entered from the side tunnel, bowing his head. He was rough, loyal, and sharp-eyed now—his casual slouch replaced by soldier-like discipline. Raven had that effect on people.
"Boss," Kain said, handing him a rolled parchment. "Here's the layout of Greenfall. I scouted every alley, guard route, and building worth noting. Also got a list of the people running the underground trades. You'll want to see this."
Raven unrolled the map, eyes scanning quickly. "Good work."
Kain stepped closer, tapping a section near the south road. "The slums here—controlled by a gang called the Iron Vultures. They've been bleeding the poor dry for years. No one challenges them because they pay tribute to the mayor."
Vee crossed her arms. "Greedy parasites. Classic small-town corruption."
Raven's fingers tapped the map. "Perfect targets."
Kain frowned slightly. "Targets? You wanna wipe them out?"
Raven's eyes glinted. "Not wipe. Absorb."
Kain blinked. "Absorb?"
"I'll give them a choice—join the shadow, or vanish in it."
Vee grinned. "Ooh, recruitment through domination~ Very villain-core."
Raven rolled the map back up. "Before that, we need an image. The villagers need to see a hero—someone who helps them, not terrifies them. Meanwhile, the real me operates in darkness."
Kain nodded slowly. "So… you're gonna play both sides. The savior during the day, and the shadow ruler at night."
Raven smirked. "Exactly. The villagers will trust the face. The criminals will fear the voice."
He stood, cloak shifting with a subtle whoosh. "Prepare a disguise. Something simple but distinct. We'll pay the slums a visit."
---
The slums of Greenfall were a maze of broken shacks, cracked lanterns, and quiet despair. Smoke from cheap fires mixed with the stench of rot. Every corner whispered danger.
Raven walked calmly through the filth, hood drawn low, dagger hidden beneath his cloak. Kain followed a few steps behind, watching their flanks.
"Boss," he murmured, "Iron Vultures run the streets here. We'll be spotted before we get halfway in."
"Good," Raven replied, voice cool. "I want them to find me."
Vee's soft voice echoed in his head. "You're baiting them~"
He smiled faintly. "No. I'm hunting them in plain sight."
It didn't take long. Three thugs stepped out from an alley, blades flashing.
"Oi, fancy cloak. You lost, rich boy?" one sneered.
Raven stopped, eyes cold. "No. I'm exactly where I need to be."
The thug frowned. "What's that supposed to—"
He didn't finish. Raven's hand flicked—shhk!—a dagger pierced his throat before he blinked.
The other two froze.
"Wha—He—he killed Rolf!"
Raven stepped forward, voice calm as steel. "Tell your boss. Raven Cross is looking for him. He has ten minutes to show up… or ten hours to bury his crew."
They bolted.
Vee floated beside him, smirking. "That was cold. You didn't even blink."
Raven's tone was flat. "Mercy is a language parasites don't understand."
---
Ten minutes later, heavy footsteps echoed. A group of armed men approached, torches lighting the dark streets. At the center was a burly man with a tattoo of wings across his neck.
"So you're the bastard making noise in my turf," he growled.
Raven stood still. "You must be the Vulture."
"Damn right. And you're about to learn—"
"—how to kneel," Raven interrupted calmly.
The gang members froze as a cold pressure filled the air. His Mind's Gambit activated, amplifying his aura. Shadows twisted subtly behind him, forming faint wings.
The Vulture's voice cracked. "W-what the hell are you…?"
Raven's tone was cold, commanding. "I'm the shadow that cleans filth like you. You have two choices. Swear loyalty—or disappear with your nest."
Silence. The men looked uneasy, exchanging glances.
Vee whispered in his ear, "They're scared. Push the dominance."
Raven took a step closer. "If you swear now, you keep your life, your gold, and your name. Betray me once, and your corpse will feed the crows you're named after."
The Vulture hesitated, sweat dripping down his temple. He finally dropped to one knee. "Y-you're the boss, Lord Raven."
The rest followed.

Kain let out a low whistle. "Damn, boss. You didn't even swing twice."
Raven looked down at the kneeling men. "Loyalty built on fear is temporary. Tomorrow, I'll give them purpose. A reason to serve."
He turned away, cloak swaying. "Clean the streets. Protect the people. Let them see 'change.' If they believe it's their choice, they'll never realize it's mine."
---
By morning, Greenfall's slums were buzzing. The Iron Vultures, once thugs, were now cleaning streets, repairing roofs, and handing out food from the mayor's "donations."
And at the center of it all stood a man in a white cloak, his hood shadowing his face.
"Who's that?" a villager whispered.
"They say he's the one who made the mayor share his wealth…"
"He looks like a priest or something!"
Raven smiled faintly behind the mask. "Call me Cross."

[Reputation Gained: Hero of the Poor]
Vee floated invisibly beside him, whispering with a giggle. "Cross by day, Raven by night~ You really are playing both sides, Host."
"Heroes inspire," Raven murmured. "But villains rule. Together, they build empires."
He turned to a group of villagers, voice warm and steady. "From now on, you'll have protection. The Iron Vultures will serve as your guards. If anyone tries to harm you, report it to them."
The crowd murmured in awe.
A young boy stepped forward timidly. "Mister Cross… why are you helping us?"
Raven knelt slightly, meeting his eyes. "Because the strong are meant to shield the weak. Remember that, boy. Someday, you'll do the same."
Vee smirked softly. "You sound almost genuine."
He stood. "I'm not pretending. A kingdom of slaves is fragile. A kingdom of believers—unbreakable."
---
As the sun set, Raven returned to his hidden base. Kain followed, impressed. "Boss, the people already love you. They call you Saint Cross now."
Raven chuckled. "Good. The louder they praise me, the deeper my shadow hides."
Vee projected new notifications.

"Progressing nicely~" Vee said. "But the world's bigger than Greenfall, Host. You ready to step beyond?"
Raven's eyes turned toward the horizon. "Not yet. I'll leave no weak roots behind. Once Greenfall kneels in loyalty, we expand."
He sat back on his throne, fingers steepled. "But first, we test faith."
Kain tilted his head. "Faith?"
Raven's eyes narrowed. "There's a temple nearby. The priest there works for the capital. He'll sense the change and investigate. When he does… we'll make an example."
Vee's grin widened. "A holy war in your backyard~ Deliciously dramatic."
"Not war," Raven corrected softly. "A show. The world must see: even gods can't stop me."
---
Night fell heavy, stars flickering like silent witnesses. Raven stood at the cave's mouth, cloak whipping in the wind.
Behind him, Kain organized his men. The Iron Vultures—once thieves—now moved with purpose. The slums gleamed under new torches. People whispered blessings to the "masked savior."
Vee floated beside him, expression softening. "You've changed fast, Host. The old you… wouldn't have smiled like this."
He glanced at her. "The old me died in a pool of betrayal. This one smiles at conquest."
She chuckled. "You sound like a monarch already."
"I'm not one yet," he murmured, eyes cold. "But soon. And when I am… no god, no hero, no kingdom will command me again."

Raven smirked faintly. "Let's begin the next act. The Savior rises… and the Devil stirs."
The duality had begun.
The mask of light shone brighter—
—to hide the eyes of darkness beneath.
