šæ Scene 19: The Cold Sink ā Zaq & Terrance
The steam in the boy's locker room is thick, smelling of chlorine and something metallicālike old pennies and raw meat. Terrance Koch scrambles backward, his sneakers slipping on the wet tile. His heart hammers against his ribs like a trapped bird.
Behind him, the shower curtain is torn. On the floor lies the discarded "husk" of a studentāhollowed out, skinless.
Terrance: (Gasping) "Not real... it's not real... please wake up..."
The wet thud-thud of feet echoes. A Skinwalker, wearing the face of a girl Terrance recognized from homeroom, rounds the corner. Her jaw unhinges unnaturally wide, her eyes rolling back to reveal the black voids of the parasite within.
Suddenly, a hand reaches out from the shadows near the benches and pulls Terrance into a dark alcove.
Voice: "Stop making noise. You're vibrating the air. They can feel the pulse in your neck."
Terrance looks up. It's Zaq. His Coquelicot red hair looks like a bloodstain in the dim light. He isn't shaking. He looks like he's carved out of stone.
Terrance: "They... they ate them! They took their skin!" Zaq: "I know. They are dual-souled now. A feast for the void."
The Skinwalker hisses, sniffing the air. It turns toward their alcove, its fingers elongating into serrated claws.
Zaq steps out. He doesn't draw a weapon. He just raises his left hand, his fingers twitching in a precise, rhythmic patternālike he's playing an invisible piano.
Zaq: "Your borrowed heart beats too fast. Let me... slow it down."
Technique: Capillary Cage.
The Skinwalker freezes mid-lunge. It's not a physical wall stopping itāit's internal. The blood vessels in its stolen legs constrict so tightly they turn into rigid cables, locking its joints in place. The creature let out a wet, gurgling sound as its stolen face turns a sickly grey.
Zaq looks at Terrance, his expression Ascetic and distant.
Zaq: "You saw the 'Backshots' incident? You saw the Feeding?" Terrance: (Nodding frantically) "I... I poked one with a pole and ran." Zaq: (A tiny, grim smile) "Resourceful. But a pole won't kill a Level 4. You have the scent of the Garden on you, Swiss boy. That's why they want you."
Zaq reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small, iron-filing charm. He presses it into Terrance's hand.
Zaq: "Stay behind me. We need to find Rook. The 'Mainstream' monsters at this school are compromised. Only the 'Lesser' ones can see the rot."
Outside, the school bell rings. It sounds like a funeral toll.
Zaq: "Class is in session, Terrance. Let's see if we can survive the first period."
