The room is crowded.
Faculty in clusters near the refreshment table. Students scattered around, some brave enough to approach professors, others huddled with friends.
I scan the room automatically. Looking for him.
Find him almost immediately.
He's near the windows. Talking to Dr. Chen, the department chair. Looking professional in dark slacks and a button-down. Relaxed. Like this is just another work event.
Like we didn't kiss six days ago.
Our eyes meet across the room.
For just a second.
Then he looks away. Back to his conversation.
Right. Professional distance.
I grab sparkling water from the refreshment table. Try to look natural. The cup is cold against my palm, condensation already making my fingers slick.
"Avery Lane."
I turn.
Dr. Martinez from my Intro to Media class. Nice woman. Early thirties. Always encouraging.
"Dr. Martinez. Hi."
"I heard you're working on research with Professor Parker. How's that going?"
