The air around the old shrine was still, yet heavy with the smell of incense. Beneath the red torii gate, the well waited—silent, ancient, hiding secrets that had never been meant to surface again.

Kagome Higurashi's scream tore through the quiet as she was dragged into its depths. One heartbeat she was inside her family's shrine, the next she was falling into darkness. The stones blurred, violet and blue light fracturing around her like shattered glass, swallowing her whole.

She tried to scream again, but the sound was stolen from her throat. Her chest tightened as though she'd been thrown into deep water. Then, all at once, she was still.

Kagome gasped, eyes flying open to see rough stone and damp moss under her hands. The roof of her family's shrine was gone. Above her stretched an endless sky.

"No… this can't be real," she whispered, trembling as she scrambled to her feet.

With a desperate heave, she clawed her way up the well and hauled herself over the rim. Her knees hit the grass, dirt clinging to her uniform. When she looked around, her breath caught in her throat.

The forest stretched endlessly, trees so old their roots looked older than time itself. Cicadas buzzed, the air warmer, richer, alive in a way she had never felt in Tokyo.

"Where… where am I?" Kagome whispered.

"You reek of fear."

The words cut through her like a blade.

Kagome turned sharply.

There, standing not far from the well, was a woman who didn't belong to this world—or any world Kagome knew. Her hair spilled like gold to her hips, shimmering in the sunlight as though spun from fire. She wore pale silk edged in silver, her figure strong and graceful, a sword at her side gleaming faintly with power.

But it was her eyes that froze Kagome in place. Violet. Piercing. Alive with something far beyond human.

"W-Who are you?" Kagome stammered.

The woman tilted her head, gaze slicing through her. "You fall from the well, and that is your first question? Not where you are? Not why the jewel hums inside you?"

Kagome's brow creased. "Jewel? What jewel?"

The stranger's lips curved faintly, though it wasn't a smile. "Pathetic. So the Shikon no Tama has returned to this world… and fate gives it to a clueless child."

Kagome stumbled back a step, heart hammering.

But the woman's eyes had already shifted away from her. They lingered instead on the Sacred Tree standing tall in the distance. An arrow pulsed faintly with spiritual energy, pinning a silver-haired figure against the bark. His head bowed, his body unmoving, but his presence was undeniable.

Kagome stared, wide-eyed. "Is that… a boy?"

The golden-haired woman's expression tightened, shadows crossing her features. Her hand brushed the hilt of her sword, and when she spoke, her voice was softer—yet laced with something sharp and unyielding.

"Inuyasha."

____________&&&

The forest's hush shattered.

A sound like tearing flesh erupted from the depths of the well, wet and grotesque. The earth trembled under Kagome's knees. She flinched, clutching her chest, heart pounding as a long, jagged claw scraped the stone wall.

Something was crawling out.

The woman with golden hair—Amateru—shifted, her hand tightening around the hilt of her blade. Her violet gaze narrowed, sharp with recognition.

"So… it wakes."

Kagome froze in terror as a massive form burst from the well. A centipede's body, slick with decay, writhed upward, each segment oozing as dozens of spindly legs tore into the grass. The upper half resembled a woman—if that woman had been stitched together from hunger and rage, with fangs stretching far too long for her mouth.

The stench hit first—rot and blood, centuries of festering malice.

Mistress Centipede had returned.

"Shikon no Tama…" the creature hissed, its tongue flicking like a serpent's. "It's here. It's inside… you."

Her sunken eyes fixed on Kagome.

The girl stumbled back, her knees threatening to give out. "M-me?!"

"Yes," the demon crooned, voice rasping like bone against stone. "Give it to me… the jewel of four souls!"

Before Kagome could react, the creature lunged.

Her scream tore through the clearing as claws slashed toward her. She threw her arms up to shield herself—

And light blazed.

Steel flashed like the moon itself. Amateru moved faster than Kagome's eyes could follow, her golden hair whipping like fire as her blade, Seigetsu, met flesh. The air split with the howl of steel biting into demon hide.

Mistress Centipede shrieked, half her arm severed clean from her body. Her body writhed, ichor spattering the grass.

"You dare crawl back to this world?" Amateru's voice was ice, dripping with disdain. "Fifty years, and still you hunger for what was never yours."

Mistress Centipede twisted, glaring, her remaining claws flexing. "You… you're still alive…"

Amateru's lips curled into a smirk. "Disappointed?"

Kagome clutched her chest, gasping for breath. The demon's gaze hadn't wavered—it was locked on her, on something within her. And then, as if yanked by instinct, Kagome's hand brushed against her skin.

Something pulsed there. Warm. Alive.

The jewel.

"No…" she whispered, realization dawning with horror. "It's… inside me?"

Mistress Centipede shrieked, renewed hunger tearing through her voice. "Yes! And I'll rip it from your very flesh!"

She lunged again, faster, more frenzied, her many legs tearing up the earth.

Amateru's blade arced in silver light once more, but this time the demon's massive body coiled, dodging. A claw struck with crushing force. Amateru caught it on her blade, but the impact drove her boots into the soil, cracks splintering beneath her feet.

The Sacred Tree trembled.

Kagome's gaze shot to it—and her breath froze.

The boy pinned against the bark stirred. His silver hair gleamed under the sunlight, his claws twitching faintly. Slowly, his head lifted, ears twitching atop his head. Golden eyes cracked open, burning like molten amber.

Kagome's heart leapt into her throat.

Amateru, gritting her teeth as she shoved Mistress Centipede back, flicked her gaze to the awakening half-demon. Her voice, sharp and commanding, rang out across the chaos:

"Inuyasha! Wake up!"
