Jennie and Lukas had been inseparable since they were kids. Growing up in the same neighborhood, they had shared countless memories, from exploring the nearby woods to having sleepovers in each other's homes. As they entered high school, their friendship only deepened, despite Lukas' growing popularity with the girls.
One sunny afternoon, Jennie snuck into Lukas' house, knowing he would be home alone. She made herself comfortable on the couch, flipping through TV channels until Lukas walked in, grinning.
"Hey, Jennie! What are you doing here?" he asked, plopping down beside her.
Jennie playfully rolled her eyes. "Just hanging out, waiting for you to get home, duh!"
Lukas chuckled and nudged her with his elbow. "I'm glad you're here. I was thinking of watching the new Marvel movie tonight. Want to join me?"
Jennie's eyes lit up. "Yes! I've been dying to see it!"
As they watched the movie, Jennie's gaze drifted to Lukas, noticing the way his eyes sparkled with excitement. She felt a flutter in her chest, but quickly pushed the feeling aside. She had known Lukas forever; she wasn't about to ruin their friendship with silly feelings.
As the credits rolled, Lukas turned to her and said, "Hey, Jennie? Can I ask you something?"
Jennie nodded, curious. "What is it?"
Lukas leaned in, his voice low. "Do you ever feel like... we're more than just friends?"
Jennie's heart skipped a beat. Was Lukas hinting at something? She searched his eyes, but they seemed to hold a friendly gaze.
Before she could respond, Lukas' phone buzzed, and he glanced at the screen. His expression changed, and he stood up, saying, "I need to go. My mom's calling."
