Chapter 28 - 28

American high schools are different from Chinese high schools. In China, students stay in fixed classrooms while teachers move between them. In American high schools, it's the opposite: teachers stay put, and students move between classrooms. Also, the curriculum isn't the same for everyone; students need to choose their courses.

Depending on the difficulty, there are general courses for the average student; "Honors" courses for students with stronger abilities; and "Advanced Placement" (AP) courses for outstanding students. At the end of each semester, students select courses for the next semester. Counselors provide specific guidance based on the student's individual situation and graduation requirements. On the first day of the school year, students receive their course schedules.

Wang Kai chose the general courses. After all, the previous Wang Kai didn't have any special skills, and even after transmigrating, he still doesn't have any. Wang Kai's goal is just an ordinary university. As for Ivy League universities, they're not within Wang Kai's consideration, unless he draws some special abilities. Otherwise, it's probably impossible.

Jimmy chose the same courses as Wang Kai. Besides his hacking skills, Jimmy's other subjects are just so-so, so he wouldn't choose any more difficult courses.

After receiving their schedules, Wang Kai and Jimmy found that most of their courses overlapped, meaning they could attend classes together. For the few remaining courses, they would attend separately. Wang Kai and Jimmy took their backpacks and headed to the classrooms where they needed to be.

Arriving in the classroom, Wang Kai saw Gwen sitting in the center. Wang Kai and Jimmy chose seats in the corner, wanting to avoid too much interaction with Gwen, since he had no feelings for her.

After a while, Peter also came to the classroom, sneaking into a seat behind Gwen. Maybe others didn't notice, but Wang Kai did. This loser is really sleazy, only daring to peek from behind. What kind of protector of flowers is that? If he didn't have Spider-Man's abilities, he probably wouldn't dare to approach her, yet he shamelessly supports Gwen's non-violence theory. He's the most violent one.

After the day's classes ended, Wang Kai and Jimmy drove home. They didn't participate in any club activities, so they got out of school relatively early, unlike high schools in China, with their early morning and late evening self-study sessions, making students feel like they're never fully rested. The hell of senior year isn't just empty talk.

"Kai, how was today?"

After driving Jimmy home, Wang Kai also returned home. Skye, like a wife waiting for her husband, came over and asked.

"It's the same as always, nothing new. What about you? If you're bored at home, you can find something to do."

Wang Kai took off his coat and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. Skye can't cook anything, and she really likes Wang Kai's cooking. Every time Wang Kai cooks, she comes into the kitchen and sneaks bites. By the time the dishes are ready and placed on the table, the first ones made are already mostly eaten. The two of them are like children, and in fact, they are children, except Wang Kai is just a bit older mentally.

"I'm still learning some things. I've found that there are many places on the internet that I can't access. Recently, I traced it back to an organization called the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.), oh, what a mouthful! My background seems to be related to them, but I can't even hack into their system, and I almost got caught. I still need to improve my abilities."

Skye said, unexpectedly setting her sights on S.H.I.E.L.D. so early. No wonder she would join Rising Tide, which opposes S.H.I.E.L.D., and keep an eye on them, thinking they're such a heinous organization.

"S.H.I.E.L.D.? That's the simplified name I gave it. I've heard of this organization,"

Wang Kai said. The simplified version of S.H.I.E.L.D. would only appear later. Right now, they still use the very long name "Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division."

Maybe they think such a long name makes them sound more official.

"You only know the name? Tell me about it."

Skye had only found out the name, not expecting her boyfriend to actually know about it.

"Okay, actually S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't that mysterious. It's an international organization, with observers in various countries. S.H.I.E.L.D. was established after World War II, but it actually had a prototype during the war, called the Strategic Scientific Reserve, which specialized in dealing with the Nazi Hydra organization. After the war, it was renamed the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate, and now it's called the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division."

Wang Kai said. S.H.I.E.L.D. changes its name too often, and each time it's so long. S.H.I.E.L.D. sounds better, and the symbol is good too. If he gets a chance to meet their people in the future, he must bring it up.

"So what do they do? Are they a secret service? Like the FBI? CIA?"

Skye listened and thought that S.H.I.E.L.D., according to Wang Kai, shouldn't be bad people.

"No, none of those. They don't manage ordinary crimes, only handle unknown things, like aliens, alien artifacts, and superpowered criminals. They don't belong to any country, although they're in America, but they're supervised by the United Nations."

Wang Kai said. This was also a problem that increasingly annoyed him when watching the TV series, because after S.H.I.E.L.D. was messed up by Hydra, its status seemed to decline sharply, and then it basically completely obeyed the US government, and later it was basically subordinate to the US government, losing its previous neutral stance.

"Am I within their jurisdiction too?"

Skye became a little nervous, because in her mind, jurisdiction meant being arrested and imprisoned.

"It's within their scope of attention, but they don't have the ability to control me. Don't think of them as too powerful. They're just some trained agents, who have gathered more excellent talents, have more surveillance of the world, and use better weapons and equipment, but that's it."

Wang Kai said disdainfully. Besides high-tech equipment and surveillance, S.H.I.E.L.D. has nothing worth caring about. Otherwise, why would Nick Fury form the Avengers, instead of having their agents stand on the Manhattan building with guns and fight the Chitauri army? In the end, it's still because S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't have much power, so Wang Kai doesn't care about S.H.I.E.L.D. The only ones Wang Kai considers dangerous are super villains like Thanos.

"Then do you think my parents could be S.H.I.E.L.D. agents? Maybe they were in an accident because of a mission."

After listening to Wang Kai, Skye at least didn't feel any animosity towards S.H.I.E.L.D. Americans hate secret agencies the most, thinking that secret agencies hinder human rights and freedom.
