I stood in the alley across from the diner. Despite the fact there wasn't a single car on the street, Grace waited until the Walk sign flashed before she crossed.
Wouldn't even break the jaywalking law if no one was looking, yet the girl never surveyed her surroundings as she walked home. Sure, it seemed quiet around here, but from my current position, I saw two different drug deals going down, and watched a prostitute take her john into the shadows about fifteen feet away from where Grace blithely passed by.
I pulled up my coat collar and followed her as she turned the corner and started the five block walk to her apartment complex. I'd make sure she got home safely, just like I had every night for the past week.
