Iris:
"I don't understand what is wrong with Luca these days," I admitted, confiding in my father.
We had arrived early in the morning to spend time with him, and I saw Luca speed out of the house. He glanced at me but did not stop to talk, then hurried away.
It felt abrupt. It was almost as if he was avoiding me.
I mean, it could be that he was embarrassed after what happened last time. But after I heard his father's conversation with him, I've been a little on edge.
"Maybe he's just suffering," my father replied, trying to make sense of it. "It isn't easy for him to stay here without a job or anything."
James was playing football with my children outside in the garden. I watched them from the window, seeing how happy they were that their parents were never going to separate again.
"Father, I don't understand," I insisted, turning back to him. "He has been here before, so it's not completely new for him. If anything, you and James should feel out of place."
