Iris:
I rushed straight to my bedroom. I didn't even try to lock the door, it would've made noise.
I jumped into bed, pulled the blanket over myself, and closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep.
I wanted him to believe he was wrong, that I wasn't on the other side of the door.
For a moment, I thought maybe he'd opened it, found no one there, and left.
But then I heard footsteps in the hallway. My heart began to pound harder in my chest.
I listened as he moved closer to the children's room. The door creaked open, and he went inside.
'Okay, he's just going to kiss them goodnight and then leave,' I told myself.
And as expected, I heard the door close softly.
However, instead of the footsteps fading away, they grew louder.
I clutched the pillowcase tighter. I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing myself not to blink even behind closed lids.
Then my door creaked open.
