I've made my decision. I have to give her that money.
The guilt is spiraling beyond my control, transforming me into someone I don't recognize with each passing hour.
Only one solution exists to end this torment... Hand over the money, pretend it never occurred.
That's what I keep telling myself. This isn't about Davina, it's about me. About finally silencing the restlessness that's devoured me since that evening.
My phone vibrates, Caroline's text illuminating the screen.
"We need to talk. Let's meet up later."
I stare at her message briefly before tapping out a curt reply.
"Can't. Busy."
I fling my phone to the side. Whatever Caroline needs can wait. I have to resolve this situation with Hughes first. Maybe then I can actually breathe, feel normal again.
That thought brings me to Velvet Crown, settling into my regular corner spot in the upscale bar. Conversations and laughter crash around me, but my attention drifts elsewhere.
