Davina's POV
Time had become meaningless to me. I sat hunched in the corner, knees pulled tight against my chest, my head pressed against the frigid metal wall.
My eyes burned from all the crying, though no more tears would fall.
They were truly gone. Away from Meridian. Away from everything we'd ever called home. Beyond reach.
It was finished.
The Hughes name, once stuck to us like filth, had been wiped clean from that town.
I shut my eyes and breathed the name that tore through my heart. "Irvin..."
I couldn't stop my mind from racing to him.
Did he have any clue?
Was he searching for me right now? Had he gone to my house?
Was he calling me over and over, lost and desperate?
Irvin had mentioned wanting to tell me something. I wondered what it could have been.
What was going through his mind at this moment?
I dragged my hand across my face.
Would he be able to connect what happened to us back to his father?
I shook my head. Will Jenkin was clever, ruthlessly so.
