Chapter 4 - CHAEBOL or is it?

Kim Jae Pov

Scene: My Apartment

The late afternoon sun poured through the large windows of my apartment, casting a golden hue over everything. I sank deeper into the plush couch, a steaming mug of tea warming my hands, though at this point of the day I would prefer kimchi better, but recently its been chilly. This place was my sanctuary, a welcome escape from the grandeur of my family's mansion. Here, I could breathe, be myself, and not worry about the weight of expectations pressing down on me.

Glancing at the city skyline, I felt a twinge of longing. The hustle and bustle below mirrored the chaotic life I led as a chaebol, filled with obligations and appearances. But here, I could let the façade slip, even if just for a moment.

Being an idol is the toughest kind of life one has to go through, starts with being famous , then off to no privacy at all, whether family or business; Everybody becomes part of your business, I can't even take a walk on the streets, I need bodyguards for that .Because fans and paparazzi will be up on my business, it gets annoying actually, happy with what I do buts it's slowly becoming a nightmare.

Just then, the door swung open, and my sister, Haerin, burst in, her energy filling the room like a refreshing breeze, She's the sweet pie in the family. "Hey, Jae! I brought snacks!" she announces, holding up a colorful bag filled with treats as if it were a trophy.

"Perfect timing, as always," I replied, a smile breaking across my face. Haerin had a way of lighting up any room she entered.

She drops the snacks on the coffee table and plops down beside me, like this is her home , why are sisters so annoying ooh and her eyes sparkles with excitement. "I swear, you spend too much time in this place. It's like a bachelor pad!" she exclaimed, her tone teasing.

"Look at you seriously why spend time locked up in your shitty apartment, when you could spend time with your family, I mean nobody chased you brother.

"I like it this way," I defend, shrugging. "It's peaceful. I can't think without all the family drama, especially with dad always on my business, he's like a hawk, you know ."

"Fair enough," she says, rolling her eyes playfully. "But you need to get out more! Being holed up here isn't good for you. You'll soon grow a beard, man and trust me, nobody wants to see that, especially your delusional fanbase. come on, step up! "

"What! you act like I am the only idol, here? You're one too and you definitely have a delusional fanbase," I defend back

"Look honey, hate to break your made up pickle, but guess what your fans are ten times more delusional than mine .....actually you're fans ain't delusional they toxic, I told you to tone down your damn visual; but you didn't listen to me again!"She says like its the most achievable thing in her life.

I chuckle, running a hand through my tousled hair, because what goes on in this girl's head, only she knows. "You know how it is. The family wants me to be perfect, always on display. They don't treat me like you, no offence, but you're the princess in the family, while I am kind of a business entity. However, here, I can just be you know … me."

Haerin softened, her expression shifting to one of understanding. "I get it. Dad gets tough on you, and I see it ; But you don't have to carry that burden alone. You have me, remember?"

"I know," I said, looking at her with genuine appreciation. "You're the best, but sometimes I just want to escape it all, it scares me knowing all I mean to my family is their reputation and image, not as their beloved son, it scares me deeply. Sometimes I feel like running away from all of this, I just want to live a normal life, but there is definitely nothing normal about being a chaebol, its weird and full of restrictions."

Haerin signs and lays on my shoulder, "I know Jae, it's not the best feeling not knowing if what your family has is love or you stand out as just a shareholder, it's the worst. But guess what, little munchkin, you'll always have me by your side, always, remember that," she reassures me with our favorite hand gestures.

"Okay, enough deep talk! What's on the agenda for today?" Haerin asks with her playful demeanor returning. "We have a new batch of trainees coming in soon, right? I can't wait, I love new interns!"

"Yeah, they actually started last week. How are you so behind on this story, whereas that's usually your hot spot? t" I reply, leaning forward with interest. "I don't know why you're obsessed with new people? It's weird and outrageous yet so natural, because it's Haerin."I giggle because she is definitely sulking right now

"Oh don't be a hater, I love exploring new cultural ways of living, and the only time I get is when I interact with new interns ." She suddenly jumps up as if a new idea has just struck her. I chuckle because this is definitely going to be fun.

"I almost forgot, this new batch is a catch, because I talked to Brandie, our manager, and instead of having only Asians working for us; we are going to be having interns from the States, Canada, all of them, think of it as onother form of advertising our work ."she says enthusiastically.

"Haerin, you're are a great planner , but don't you think you went overboard? How did Dad even take this news?"

"Actually, it's funny because he doesn't know yet, and I actually plan to keep it that way; it's my decision, he should definitely not interfere."

"Haerin , be serious, are you kidding me! you know he will be furious when he gets back from his business trip and finds foreign faces, it will be so obvious: That's definitely not a good idea, I hope he actually takes your decision right this time, I don't want you knocking at my apartment, crushing out and saying you need to stay at my place for peace of mind." I laugh because it happens often.

"Jae, be nice , you're my only brother, or do you want me to stay at a motel and ruin the so-called "chaebol" protocol and chart the news in days, come you have to understand sometimes,"

"Ooh, I do , sister but just admit you hate my cozy apartment when you're not at crossheads with dad and otherwise you seem to adore it every time you need, space."

"Jae, don't annoy me, and yeah, so what, I will crush out here a long as I want, you're sarcastic words will definitely not stop me."

I am in tears now, because she is definitely losing it .

Haerin's expression shifted, and she leaned in closer. "Speaking of space , I have to tell you about someone I met on my trip."

"Who?" I asked, intrigued.

"Her name is Chloe, and she's from Canada, thou she definitely looks asian, her genes are no joke. You won't believe how amazing she is!" Haerin exclaims, her excitement palpable.

"Okay, tell me more who is this that got you or giggly all of sudden," I encourage, my curiosity piqued.

"We met on the flight back, and she's just stunning. Her hair is this beautiful mix, and she has the most captivating smile! We hit it off right away," Haerin says, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

"Sounds promising," I replied, a smile creeping onto my face. "What else about her?"

Haerin's face lit up, and she leaned closer, speaking in a conspiratorial whisper. "She's so warm and genuine. You know how superficial some people can be in our world? Chloe felt real. It's like she sees past the glitz and glamour."

A flicker of longing washed over me. "It sounds like she really gets it. I wish I could meet someone like that."

"Trust me, you'd like her! She's different from the usual crowd. There's something special about her," Haerin insists, her enthusiasm infectious. "You should come to the event next week. I think she'll be there!"

"How will she be there , did you guts exchange numbers or something?"

"No, I am not sure if she is ill since I didn't inform her, I kind of snuck an invitation card into her bag; my gut tells me she will be there.I am definitely excited, can't wait to meet her again

"An event? What kind of event?" I ask, intrigued.

"It's a gathering for the trainees and some industry insiders. It'll be a great opportunity for you to network, and you might finally get a chance to meet Chloe!" she urges, nudging me playfully.

I hesitated. "you're kidding, right How are you sure she even acknowledged your invitation, and what's your reason for being all sneaky on her?"

"Well she didn't recognize me , which is normal, so I was afraid to trigger our friendship."

"Haerin! you just met , how is that already friendship, you're so unbelievable."

"Jae, I didn't want her to feel a bit awkward."

"I know , but if you want to meet again , sooner or later she'll definitely discover."

"Come on, Jae! Just think about it. You're always surrounded by people who want something from you. It would be nice to meet someone who doesn't care about your fame," Haerin countered, her tone serious now. "Plus, you need to lighten up a bit!"

I chuckled, appreciating my sister's concern. "Okay, okay. I'll think about it," I promise.

"Good! Keep me updated on what you decide. I want to you to meet this charming friend of mine," she says, a playful grin on her face.

As Haerin continued to talk about Chloe, I found myself increasingly intrigued. Who was this girl who had captured my sister's attention so completely? I was used to the superficiality of the entertainment world, where people were often more interested in my status than in who I truly was. The thought of meeting someone genuine was refreshing.

"By the way, what does she look like?" I asked, leaning back against the couch, a playful smile on my lips. "Is she as gorgeous as you say?"

Haerin laughs, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Oh, what's with you all over sudden? ok let me spoil you a bit she has this effortless beauty. But it's not just about looks; it's her personality—she's so easy to talk to, and she has this infectious energy. You'd definitely find her charming."

I fell a mix of excitement and curiosity brewing inside me, which is so awkward that never happens to me . "And what's her vibe? Is she more of a party girl or a quiet thinker?"

"Definitely a thinker," Haerin replied, nodding vigorously. "We talked about everything from our childhoods to our dreams. I feel like she understands me in a way that most people don't."

"Wow, that's pretty deep for a plane ride," I remark because this sounds a ton bit more interesting. "It sounds like you really connected."

Haerin smiles, and her expression softens. "I feel as if I met a friend whose soul is attached to mine.....ok enough of this what's your gift to the new interns at the party tomorrow?" her demeanor suddenly turns serious.

"You remember right, its a tradition?"

"Yeah, I obviously know that, just not yet sure what to do for them ." I rub my hair , because I am genuinely confused."

Haerin grinned. "That's the spirit! at least you actually do remember this time." she grins Let's make a plan for the welcome event. We can set up some icebreaker activities to help them relax."

"Good idea," I say, my enthusiasm growing. "Maybe we could have a small introduction session where everyone shares their favorite K-drama or movie."

"Yes! That'll lighten the mood," she agrees, her excitement infectious. "And we can provide snacks—everyone loves snacks!"

"Especially yours," I tease, gesturing to the bag she brought. "What did you get, anyway?"

Haerin reaches into the bag and pulled out an assortment of treats—chocolate-covered snacks, chips, and even a few Korean goodies, she is always prepared when it comes to goodies. "I went a little overboard, but it's all worth it. Food brings people together!"

I laugh, taking a chip and crunching it between my teeth. "You're right. Food is the universal language."

As we continued planning, we discussed different ideas for the welcome event, brainstorming fun activities that would help the new trainees feel at ease. I felt a wave of anticipation wash over me. This was my chance to make a positive impact and perhaps even help someone else find their footing in the industry.

After a while, Haerin glanced at the clock. "I should probably get going soon. I have a few things to wrap up before the weekend."

"Thanks for coming by," I say, my heart feeling fuller. "It's always nice to have you here."

"Anytime! Just remember, you're not alone in this," she said, standing up and gathering her things. "And take care of yourself, okay? Don't let the pressure get to you."

I nod, feeling the warmth of her support, she is my sister after all "I won't. But you better keep me updated on Chloe!"

"Deal!" Haerin replied with a wink before heading toward the door. "And don't forget to text me if you need anything."

I return to the couch, reflecting on our conversation. I feel a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for the future. The thought of welcoming the trainees fills me with hope, and I am definitely determined to create an environment where they could thrive, especially now that appa is away on a trip."

Looking around my apartment, I felt grateful for this space—my sanctuary. It was here that I could find the balance between my chaotic life and the genuine connections I yearned for.

With a smile, I began jotting down ideas for the welcome event, ready to embrace the challenges ahead. This was just the beginning of something special, and I felt ready to take it on.

CHLOE's pov

It's Sunday already, and the funny thing I start work tomorrow, ooh I feel giddy, excited, and nervous at the same time .

I spot Casey enjoying her sleep. I am kind of afraid about her well-being, usually back home, when I am not home, my mom or brother looks out for her , but here I have absolutely nobody to rely on.

Trust me I am definitely a ton bit scared to leave her alone , she not usually a stubborn cat but she can get overly curious about her surroundings.

My thoughts shift to the view just outside my window, oh my bunnies it's definitely fancy. The buildings within Celestial Dreams are definitely a sight to see. They are crafted in the most stylish way possible; each building has large billboards showcasing who I think are the fan favorites.

The buildings are well spaced and surrounded by a beautiful flower garden, which I presume definitely come in handy during drama and musical mv , ooh my mind tells me this is gonna be fun.

So far my worry is Casey I don't know if what she will do when she explores here and from the looks of things I can't just lock her up.I was in a dilemma. I wished I had googled this place earlier, I could have left Casey back home.

Sighing I look at Casey, I could never live without my cat as long as she is alive I can't just leave her.Ooh screw this I decide I will put my trust that she won't be naughty.

"Casey?"I call out, she looks at me, purring with the most innocent gaze you'll ever get to see.

"Please don't be naughty and behave whenever I leave you alone, I don't know these people well some might hate you and some may like so please be nice, "I sigh, knowing very well she might not have clocked what I said,I mean, she's a cat after all .
