CHAPTER 1 – My New Job

It's already been three weeks that I've been looking for work and still nothing. Suddenly, my 17-year-old sister Hinata walks into my room with a letter. I ask her what's inside:

« What's inside? And I already told you to knock before coming in. »

Hinata: « Sorry, I forgot. And anyway, it's not like you were doing something important, » she says. « In the letter, there are the school fees you have to pay. »

I took the letter. My eyes ran over the words:

« Dear Fugoo,

I wish to inform you that it is time to pay the school fees for the second semester. You have one week maximum to pay, otherwise your sister will be expelled from high school.

– The Principal »

« Damn, here it begins. » I only have 1000 yen in my account. As I was deep in thought, my sister asked:

« Am I going to get expelled? »

Her voice and her eyes were filled with sadness. Seeing that look, my heart tightened with guilt.

Me: « Don't worry, I'll find a solution. »

Reassured, my sister left my room and went to do her homework. After she left, I grabbed my laptop and started surfing the internet to find a job. After two hours of searching, I received a strange message:

« Are you looking for work? If yes, we're hiring as a prison guard at Monster Prison. The salary will be 500,000 yen per week, and you don't need experience. »

« What? 500,000 yen per week and no skills required? » I decided to accept and called the number, managing to get the position.

The next day, a military vehicle was waiting for me in front of my house. In the vehicle were four men. One of them stepped out and rang my doorbell. I opened the door and asked:

« Why didn't you just come with a normal car, or give me the address of the prison? This is starting to creep me out. »

The man answered in a cold tone: « That information is confidential. Now get in and stop asking questions. »

I decided to get in, even though I remained suspicious. After five hours of driving, we arrived at a huge, high-security prison. To enter, you had to scan your face, your voice, and also know a password that changed every three hours. « Wow, the security is insane. »

They led me into the prison director's office.

The director: « So you're the one we hired, » he said. « Nice to meet you, my name is Kaito Ishiro. »

Ishiro stood up, handed me a uniform, and said: « Every time you work, you must wear this. You're assigned to Block C. »

I asked: « Do I start today or tomorrow? » Thinking it was some kind of joke, Ishiro laughed and said:

« Of course you're starting today. »

« Seriously? I'm starting now? » But seeing his expression, I realized he was serious.

A man escorted me to Block C and gave me my tasks for the first day:

1. Feed the prisoners, and do not provoke them verbally.

2. Sweep the prison yard.

3. Enforce curfew on the inmates.

« It looks easy, » that's what I thought. After giving me the tasks, the man left without a word. I started working. I opened the hatch and dropped food for the first prisoner, then shut it quickly. As I was about to leave, the prisoner said:

« Ehh, that's a new face. You a rookie guard? »

I didn't answer, but he kept talking and added:

« You know, before you, a guard was killed by a prisoner. »

He said that with a terrifying grin. I got scared, so I rushed to give food to the others. But they too made strange remarks.

After finishing feeding the inmates of Block C, I went to the yard to sweep. While walking, I overheard my colleagues discussing something, but I couldn't make it out clearly. At the yard, I was sweeping calmly when suddenly I saw the corpse of a guard.

I was in total shock, remembering what the prisoner had said. I decided to call my colleagues. One came faster than the others, and on his badge was written « Maku Nishi »—probably his name. Nishi came and disposed of the body in the cruelest way: he burned it before throwing the ashes into a trash can.

Shocked, I asked: « Why didn't you bury him? You're a monster. »

He said nothing and left.

After finishing all my tasks, Director Ishiro congratulated me and muttered:

« Good that you survived your first day. »

I heard it, but pretended I didn't and left his office. Afterwards, I went home and found my two sisters. I learned that Hinata had cooked. I thanked her and sat down to eat, but the moment I opened my mouth to taste her rice, the image of the corpse came back to me and I threw up.

I apologized and ran to my room.

Hinata (Me)

« What happened? Why did he vomit in the food? » Intrigued, I decided to go to his room, and this time I knocked. But he didn't open. I asked:

« What's wrong, big brother? »

He answered: « Yeah, I'm fine, don't worry. »

Me: « You're lying! »

Him: « I assure you I'm fine. Go help Mira with her homework instead. »

Even though I was skeptical, I had to accept. I went to help Mira, just like he said.
