Chapter 2 - The Heart Wants What It Wants

The Heart Wants What It Wants

Eva

By midnight, most of the invited guests were already leaving the Bradley's estate, leaving only family and a handful of close friends who wanted to stay for a few more days to grieve with the family.

I wanted to leave as well. I was even packing up my belongings. I knew that I'd be doing my friendship with Kiki and my reputation good, by staying away from him. But what can I say; the heart wants what it wants.

"Eva Sutton," Kiki said, bursting into her room with subtle anger as she saw me packing up. "Don't tell me you were planning on leaving me alone with vultures that I call my relatives?"

I laughed, caught in the act. "Of course not."

She fell onto her fluffy king-size bed, letting out a sigh of relief. We were silent for a while, until I spoke.

"Did your mum eventually come?"

"Fuck my mum." She said, flatly, not looking at me.

I didn't push. Instead, I got on the bed and lay next to her, shoulder to shoulder.

"You doing okay?"

"I think it was a little insensitive of Susannah to announce that she's having a baby at my dad's funeral." She muttered, staring at the ceiling. Then she turned to me, squinting her eyes. "Don't you think so too?"

I stuttered, "I, I don't know. I think it was pretty cool."

And before I knew it, Kiki got on her knees, picked up a pillow and began hitting me with it while she muttered, laughing: "you're supposed to always be on my side, Eva."

That was Kiki, daughter of a billionaire, spoiled enough to get whatever she wanted. But with me, she didn't have to pretend. Our friendship was true, it wasn't about money. I was basically a nobody in their world. But when we met for the first time in college, she treated me like a sister she never had. And I loved her for it.

"My brother is gonna be a dad, huh?" Kiki imagined.

Her brother. My mission.

I stopped listening while Kiki praised how almost perfect Susannah was for her brother. All I was focused on was the different scenarios I had created of Shawn and I in my head. It all felt so real that I felt this tingling sensation in my stomach. And when this man in my head was finally about to make me come, I squeezed my thighs tight, hoping that it would make my imaginary sensation feel even more real.

But I was forgetting I was next to Kiki.

"Dude? What is wrong with you?" She asked, staring at me confused.

I was trembling, from both pleasure and embarrassment. I had to look for an excuse.

"I'm gonna get some fresh air, outside." I quickly mumbled, hurrying to leave Kiki's sight.

"I can come with you," Kiki offered, about to get up as well, but I told her I could handle it all by myself. Of course that hurt her feelings, but Kiki had always been too clingy. My space was her space, my business was her business. I hardly had secrets of my own. It was a miracle she hadn't found out about her brother and I.

I was finally out, in the open space of the Bradley's Estate. The night scenery was breathtaking, from the lighting, down to the sculpted golden fountain made in their father's image.

The air was cold, too cold, but I wanted to go for a swim nonetheless. Maybe it would help shake off a particular married man that had been stuck in my head.

I striped down to my bikini, dropping off the rest of my clothes in a messy heap by a corner. Then I dived right into cold, stinging water, careful not to make a big splash.

Just as I was swimming, I heard footsteps. Shawn and his wife.

"Baby, what should we name our baby?" Susannah asked, slurring.

I ducked low, keeping my head water level, just as Shawn and his wife appeared.

"You shouldn't be drinking, if at all you're even pregnant." Shawn said, agitated, ripping the wine glass away from her hands and shattering the glass to pieces.

"I'm celebrating, baby." She shot back. "After all these years, I can finally give you what you've always wanted. Then maybe, when you look at me, I can finally see the love you say you have for me."

So she knows her husband doesn't love her as much.

Shawn didn't answer. He signalled to one of the maids and told her to take his wife to her room. He was so out of love that he couldn't even take his drink pregnant wife to her room.

"You can come out now, Sutton." A familiar voice rang out, cutting me from my thoughts.

I stuck my entire head out of the water, only to see Shawn facing me directly from above the pool.

"I thought you were packing your things," he said flatly.

"Are you following me, Mr. Bradley?"

My question silenced him.

He stared at me and I stared right back, not breaking eye contact. I arched subtly, pressing my breasts together sothey'd appear fuller, bigger than he had seen them before. I bit my lower lips like a puppy begging for its owner's attention.

Maybe I was doing too much, but I hoped it was just enough.

"It's freezing, Eva. Get out of the water." Shawn demanded in a clipped tone, as if he were my elder brother.

I laughed. "Ever the gentleman. Fuck you, Shawn." I turned away and continued swimming.

Do I have to spell it out to this man? F—U—C—K—M—E! I crave you, I want you. And I know you do me too.

"Eva," he called out, like a warning. But I didn't listen. I dove, going deeper and deeper, even with the chillness of the water biting at my skin. I was a pro at college, so it didn't bother me. I could hear his muffled voice, underneath the water, calling out to me repeatedly. At least he cared.

Just when I was about to go back up, I felt my calves twitch, but I didn't pay much attention to it. Then all of a sudden, my legs wouldn't move. It was as if all my muscles had stiffened up.

Hypothermia. Not now, not when I was already running out of breath. I looked around, searching for anything I could pull so Shawn could tell that I was in trouble. But I couldn't find anything.

So I thought, this was it. This was how I was going to die. And with my last breath, I called out to Shawn.
