"The quarterly projections for the European merger are, as you can see, contingent on—"
Mo Yichen held up a hand, silencing the entire boardroom. His private phone was vibrating. He never took calls during a merger meeting, but this was her line. He'd set a specific, silent vibration for it.
He answered, his voice a low, annoyed clip. "Mo Yi, I'm in a meeting—"
A sound cut through the line. A raw, broken, gasping sob.
It wasn't a strategic cry for attention. It wasn't a sniffle of frustration. It was the sound of a woman who had completely shattered.
His woman.
Mo Yichen sat straight, his eyes narrowed into slits. The billion-dollar merger, the room full of executives, nothing else mattered right now.
"Mo Yi?" he said, his voice now tight with a new, urgent, terrifying concern. "...Mo Yi, what's wrong? Where are you?"
All he got in response was another shuddering, choked sob that tore right through him, ripping his composure to shreds.
