By the time the last corrupted soldier fell, both of my shadows stood beside me—one with twin blades, the other with a shield like a fortress.
For the first time, I felt… safe.
But Nalos didn't look impressed. He looked serious.
"You're making too much noise," he said. "The stronger your shadows get, the faster they will notice."
"They?" I asked.
He sheathed his dagger. "The ones who own this world. The gods. And trust me—if they find you before you're ready…" His grin returned, but it didn't reach his eyes. "…you won't just die. You'll be erased."
The shadows loomed at my side, silent and steady. My fists clenched.
I wasn't going to be erased. Not again.
