'The former operative is writing something.'
He thought about the three young operatives who had put their weapons down.
He thought about what the administrative review would do with them.
'I'll write it honestly,' he thought. 'Whatever it costs.'
He went back to the camp.
He opened the third journal.
He wrote one more line.
The three who came to speak to me tonight: they're going to be alright. They made a choice that cost them something and they know what the cost is and they're not pretending it isn't real. That's the beginning of something better than what they had before.
The fourth: also going to be alright. Different path. Also valid.
I don't know what I'm going to be. I'll find out when I sit down to write the record.
He closed the journal.
He put all three of them back in the pack.
He looked at the ordinary darkness of a forest at night.
'The settlement is still there,' he thought.
'The demonstration is still going.'
