Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Brothers and Blood

(Genesis 4)

Outside Eden, Adam and Eve had two sons: Cain and Abel. Cain worked the soil, while Abel tended flocks. One day, they both brought offerings to the Lord. Abel's offering — the firstborn of his flock — pleased God. But Cain's offering from the fruits of the ground did not.

Jealousy burned within Cain. God warned him: "Sin is crouching at your door. Its desire is for you, but you must master it."

Cain did not listen. In the field, rage overtook him, and he struck down his brother Abel. When God asked, "Where is your brother?" Cain replied coldly, "Am I my brother's keeper?"

The ground cried out with Abel's blood. God marked Cain, sending him away as a wanderer. Yet even in judgment, God placed a sign upon Cain so no one would kill him.

The world grew darker. Cities rose, violence spread, and the children of Adam filled the earth with corruption. But in time, another son was born to Adam and Eve — Seth — through whom a new hope would come.
