Boom!
Just as Dusknoir was immobilized by the move Magical Roots, the sand-charged tornado reached him, wrapping around his massive body and causing continuous damage from the combined storm and sand.
Even so, the strength of this Dusknoir was truly incredible. With its robust body, it managed to forcibly shatter Trapinch's Gust move.
But as soon as it broke free from the wind current, another sand tornado struck it head-on.
Meanwhile, multiple roots danced in the air; their tips twisted in unison, aiming directly at Dusknoir and surrounding him with green flashes.
Annoyed by those persistent roots, Dusknoir ignited flames around itself to counter the energy of the Magical Leaf move infused in the roots, burning them to ashes.
Even so, it couldn't avoid being caught again by Sandslash's combined move Sand Spin Whirl. The power of this attack, far greater than Trapinch's, raised a tornado strong enough to hurl Dusknoir into the air.
Without pause, Sandslash used a sand whip, slamming Dusknoir into the ground with a deafening crash.
At the same time, Shellder's Hydro Pump and Meltan's Thunderbolt struck together, combining their energies and hitting Dusknoir with such force that they left a massive crater in the area.
Craaaack!
A sound like shattering glass suddenly echoed; the dark space around them filled with web-like cracks, and the blackness covering the area began to fade, revealing a clear moonlight glow in the sky.
"Did we... win?"
Ethan Black narrowed his eyes, watching Dusknoir lying in the crater, the battlefield in ruins and the sandstorm still raging.
"Dus... noir..."
Sensing the entrance to the Spirit World breaking, Dusknoir stood up, fixed its gaze on Ethan Black, and let out a low growl.
"Hmph, keep attacking!"
With a cold snort, Ethan Black gave the order.
The roots once again surged from the ground.
This time, Dusknoir reacted quickly: it floated up and pierced through the sandstorm to gain altitude.
But the roots, infused with Magical Leaf energy, had also inherited the ability to track targets. Seeing Dusknoir rise, they whistled through the air toward it and wrapped around its arms again.
Shellder and Meltan seized the chance to gather energy once more: Hydro Pump and Thunderbolt crossed through the air, striking Dusknoir directly in mid-flight.
Already exhausted from the siege of the five Pokémon, Dusknoir lost stability after the combined hit and fell from the sky.
Trapinch and Sandslash were already waiting on the ground; as it fell, both lunged forward.
Trapinch, with sinister energy in its mouth, used the move Bite, highly effective against Ghost-type Pokémon.
Sandslash, meanwhile, spun with the move Rapid Spin, unleashing Metal Claw like a battle top and leaving deep wounds on its opponent's body.
"Final attack, Cacturne, use Absorb!"
"Cac cac cac!"
Countless green roots sprouted from the ground, wrapping around the battered Dusknoir. The absorbed energy drained its strength until it was left unable to fight.
"Go, Poké Ball!"
When the roots released it, Ethan Black threw a Poké Ball, capturing Dusknoir's imposing body. After a few weak struggles, the sphere clicked shut: Dusknoir had been successfully captured.
"Phew... finally down..."
Ethan Black breathed in relief. Gathering the strength of six Pokémon and the advantage of the sandstorm had been just enough to defeat it.
He ran, grabbed the Poké Ball, and locked it in safe mode.
"This way, it shouldn't be able to escape..."
Recalling the danger he had faced, he wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
His Pokémon approached, also exhausted. That Pokémon was incredibly strong; perhaps not much weaker than the Steelix they had faced before.
"Good work, everyone. Have some nutritious juice to recover."
He took bottles from his space backpack and handed them out one by one.
As he looked at Dusknoir's Poké Ball, his expression turned pensive.
"There were lots of people in the quarry... so why did it come straight for me?"
He could feel it: that Dusknoir had come for him.
"Wait... they say it can go back and forth between this world and the afterlife... Could it have sensed something special in my soul?"
After all, his soul came from another world.
The thought made him tense; he began to suspect that might be the real reason.
Moreover, since this was the place where his transmigration had occurred, perhaps Dusknoir's presence there wasn't a coincidence.
A chill ran down his back and he nearly dropped the Poké Ball.
"Maybe handing it over to the Pokémon Researchers' Guild wouldn't be a bad idea."
After all, Dusknoir's evolution was very special: a Dusclops only evolved if it carried a Reaper Cloth and was traded, just like Onix with its particular method.
Thinking of its value, his eyes gleamed... but soon he frowned.
If it really could detect the anomaly in his soul, handing it over might put him in grave danger.
