Chapter 139 - A Woman Burdened by Sin

"Nyehehe… Ehehe…"

It was another new morning, and early on, Miss Fíliya sat up in her bed and began to let out some silly giggles that had nothing to do with elegance. The reason she was acting up so early was, of course, because Fíliya was checking her gains. Looking at the points that had grown for no apparent reason, Fíliya felt as if she had entered a harvest season again; after all, it was a very satisfactory number.

From outside Fíliya's room came the sound of approaching footsteps, and then, someone knocked on her door with a light touch.

"Fíliya… may I come in?"

It was Fern's voice.

Oh, she came over so early. Fíliya composed herself, then rubbed the soft flesh of her cheeks.

Without even a second of thought, there was only one reason Fern would come here.

Analyzing the child's personality, she was definitely here to [thank] her.

After completely calming down, Fíliya quickly threw a jacket over her upper body and then used magic to open the door for Miss Fern from a distance.

Fern entered the room, closed the door, and then slowly walked towards Fíliya, her expression tinged with a slight blush.

"Here, sit here."

Fíliya smiled at Fern and patted the edge of her bed.

Fern nodded and, very cooperatively, sat down beside Fíliya.

"Well? You must have thought about what you wanted to say before you came in, Fern? Why are you hesitating at the last moment?"

Fíliya stared at Fern's profile with a strange smile on her face.

Fern's face grew redder, and she even began to unconsciously fidget with her fingers.

"Sigh... Fern, are you a little too easy to win over? I just gave you a simple gift, don't tell me I've conquered you this easily?"

Eh?!

Fern's eyes widened, her expression a bit dazed. Clearly, Fíliya's words were completely beyond any possibility she had imagined. Now her little head was filled with question marks, completely unable to understand what Fíliya was up to.

"Mhm, I understand. A confession is something that takes a lot of courage, after all. Sigh... I'm such a sinful woman, mercilessly reaping the love of young maidens wherever I go... For that, I apologize."

Fíliya placed a hand on her forehead, her expression exceptionally dramatic.

"Uh... have you misunderstood something? I don't have those kinds of feelings for you."

After hearing Fíliya's words, Fern, who had been blushing and silent with her head down, suddenly became much more alert. She immediately stood up, crossed her arms in front of her, and then took several steps back with a look of disdain until her back was pressed firmly against the wall.

Fern's expression at that moment seemed to say:

[There should be a limit to your narcissism, you know?]

"Hehe? So it's not like that? I thought that after receiving that gift, you were deeply moved by me and had fallen in love. That's why you ran over to secretly confess to me at a time when the sky isn't even fully bright."

Fíliya continued to look at Fern with a strange smile, completely unfazed by Fern's look of disdain.

"I already said I don't have those kinds of feelings for you... Please stop making these jokes."

Fern bit her lip, her tone a little reproachful. She really didn't know how to deal with Fíliya's off-the-wall behavior.

"Mmm... alright, just pretend I didn't say anything."

After teasing Miss Fern a little, Fíliya shrugged casually and prepared to move on.

But then, something happened that surprised her a little.

Even though she had already given up and wasn't going to continue with words that would make Miss Fern blush, in Fíliya's eyes, Fern's figure began to approach her at a rapid speed.

A faint impact brought Fíliya back to her senses. She looked at Miss Fern, who was now right in front of her and hugging her, and found it exceptionally amusing.

"Oh? I thought you found me disdainful, Fern."

Fíliya chuckled lightly, with no intention of struggling. She rather enjoyed this feeling of being hugged by someone.

"Not at all... How could I find you disdainful? I'm very grateful for everything you've done for me... So... if it's just this much, I can still do it."

Fern said with a blush, her voice growing quieter and quieter until it was as faint as a mosquito's buzz.

Hearing this, Fíliya also slid her hands under Miss Fern's arms, clasped them behind Miss Fern's back, and patted her gently.

The two hugged silently for several dozen seconds until Miss Fern was the first to not be able to take it anymore.

She was seen hastily pushing Fíliya away, her face red.

"So... anyway, that's it... S... see you later, Fíliya."

After dropping that line, Fern quickly fled Fíliya's room.

Watching that rapidly escaping figure, Fíliya just shook her head helplessly, then let her upper body fall backward.

She lay back down on the bed, but Fíliya had no intention of going back to sleep. She was just silently pondering in her heart.

"Does this count as [loving humanity]?"

Fíliya's tone held a hint of doubt, as if she were asking herself.

After all, she had always remembered the advice from Miss Sense. Not just loving the Demon Race, but also learning to [love humanity]... What a daunting task.

Thinking of this, Miss Fíliya finally let out a self-deprecating laugh.

The rest of that day was rather dull. The four-person party split into pairs again to wander around the city.

And today, Fíliya's partner was, of course, that little elf girl who never grows up.

Fíliya accompanied Frieren to purchase supplies. After all, they were about to set off on a journey again, and this time they would be on the road for a long time, so they had to be well-prepared.

"Fíliya, how much of this stuff do you think we should buy?"

Frieren looked at Fíliya with a troubled expression and showed her a piece of paper in her hand.

On it were written the various items Fern had told them to buy, but even Miss Fern had her moments of oversight... After all, this paper didn't specify the required quantity for each item for Frieren.

"Mmm... let's prioritize getting enough food for now…"

Hearing this, Fíliya guiltily averted her gaze.

After all, she was also an oddball who had lived a sheltered life, always enjoying the care of others, with absolutely no life experience. She didn't even know what the uses were for the long list of things on that paper.

"Let's stock up on food first. As for the rest, let's just go with our gut."

Miss Fíliya suggested.

And Frieren clearly agreed with Fíliya's view. One could only wonder if Miss Fern would regret letting these two go shopping for daily necessities.
