After a year, the plague on Westeros was completely quelled. King Robert designated the day the last patient in King's Landing recovered and left the isolation area as Redemption Day.
Although this great plague did not spread to the inland towns of Westeros like the Great Spring Sickness a century ago, as it was promptly contained within cities by various major cities, the speed and intensity of this outbreak were much greater than a century ago.
Taking King's Landing as an example, while not quite nine out of ten houses empty, it was still four or five out of ten, and if one person fell ill, the whole family would be infected and eventually die. For instance, the population of Flea Bottom was reduced to less than five thousand, and the bodies burned in the Dragon Nest piled up like mountains, requiring at least several months or even longer to be completely cleared.
Other cities, while better than King's Landing, were only marginally so, especially White Harbor. White Harbor, being in the North, did not have a very large population to begin with, and this great plague had caused such significant losses that it was already severely weakened.
In addition, population loss was just one of the problems faced by the lords of various major cities. Taxes, inheritances, public order, and all sorts of other troubles gradually emerged as the plague subsided. Even Robert had to give up his hobbies and dutifully sit on the Iron Throne to handle various affairs.
The situation across the Narrow Sea was somewhat similar to Westeros. As Liza of the Storm God Temple obtained medicine from Summerhall, the plague in Braavos was gradually brought under control and soon subsided. The prestige of the Storm God Temple also gradually increased during this process, and after the plague ended, the number of storm god worshipers was second only to the Moon Singers, making it arguably the second-largest religious faith in Braavos.
Compared to the storm god's faith, which only grew stronger in Braavos, the faith of the god of calamity rapidly spread to other Free Trade City States during this great plague. Not to mention the city-states that suffered from the plague, even Norvos, which was not affected, established a Temple of the God of Calamities, and this was even with the permission of the bearded priests.
As for Kohor, it already had the faith of the god of calamity due to Lynd, and this time, the number of believers increased even further, completely suppressing the faiths of the Black Goat God and the Lord of Light. The two religious forces, originally enemies, had to join hands to barely resist the ascendant faith of the god of calamity.
The same situation occurred in Volantis. After the Church of the God of Calamities resolved the plague, a temple appeared in the city center, directly across from the Red Temple of the Lord of Light.
Marthus did not stay in Volantis. After resolving the plague there, he immediately took his people to Slavers Bay. For Marthus, this plague was the best opportunity for the god of calamity to spread its teachings. Once this opportunity was missed, he wouldn't know when the next one would come.
However, Marthus soon returned from Slavers Bay to the Disputed Lands with his people, because the plague in Slavers Bay did not last long and was quickly put out.
Since the plague mostly spread among slaves, when the plague broke out, the slave masters in Slavers Bay dealt with it in the simplest and most brutal way: they directly buried all the infected slaves in Slavers Bay, completely eradicating the source of the disease.
Although the might of the god of calamity was not fully demonstrated, the three major city-states of Slavers Bay still built a temple for the god of calamity, and almost all of those who believed in the god of calamity were slaves.
Compared to the plagues in the Seven Kingdoms, the Free Trade City States, and Slavers Bay, the situation of the Dothraki, as the source of this great plague, was clearly worse.
The Dothraki themselves are very wary of witchcraft and such things. Warlocks and witches are particularly discriminated against by them. Not to mention accepting treatment from these people, they are not even willing to touch them.
And these people, whom they discriminate against, more or less understand some medical skills, which are far more sophisticated than the Dothraki's primitive treatment methods.
Even if they cannot completely solve the plague, they can more or less curb its spread.
Without effective containment of the plague, and with the Dothraki's penchant for wandering, the ultimate result was that all Khals on the Dothraki Sea fell into the great plague, and even Vis Dothrak was not spared.
However, among the many Dosh Khaleen living in Vis Dothrak, there were not a few who were skilled in medicine. They quickly contained the plague and treated many Khals who came to Vis Dothrak, thereby gaining considerable prestige.
Other Khals wandering in the grasslands were not so lucky. They could only rely on their physique and faith to resist the erosion of the plague. A large number of Dothraki died from illness, and many Khals perished as a result.
Drogo's Khal, being the source of this great plague, naturally suffered the most deaths. When he left the Disputed Lands, he had as many as one hundred thousand Dothraki warriors under him, but by the time he arrived at Vis Dothrak, he had only a little over twenty thousand Dothraki warriors left.
Many of these twenty thousand were the result of him encountering other Khals who were even weaker from the plague on the way and absorbing them. If these people were not counted, he would only have a few thousand Dothraki warriors left, meaning that as many as ninety thousand Dothraki warriors died on his journey.
If even powerful Dothraki warriors were in such a state, the situation of their servants and slaves was naturally even more tragic. Weak children and elderly people all died, with only some strong Jhaqqa Rhan surviving.
The Dothraki suffered heavy losses in this great plague, which was good news for any city-states living under the Dothraki's iron hooves, because in the next few years, the Dothraki would likely be absorbing each other or recuperating on the Dothraki Sea, and would no longer threaten the security of the city-states.
Lynd also took advantage of this great plague to complete his control over the Disputed Lands and the Three City States in a short period, much shorter than he had anticipated.
Although the systems of the Three City States largely remained the same, the military power and public order were in Lynd's hands. Half of the city's various taxes were submitted to Summerhall, and of the remaining half, another half was allocated for military pay and other expenses, with only a quarter used for urban construction and maintenance.
