The silence on the other end of the line was so profound, Everly was half convinced Jeremy had either fallen back asleep or been spontaneously abducted by aliens. It stretched on, a vast, empty void of sound, before finally being shattered by his weary, gravelly voice.
"Then what happened? From your suspiciously energetic and cheerful voice, I'm assuming nothing catastrophic occurred last night, right? Then again, considering your luck stat is probably maxed out in some obscure cosmic RPG, I believe you could walk into a nuclear reactor and come out with a nice tan and a new superpower."
Everly grinned, a wicked little curve of her lips. She expertly switched the call to loudspeaker, plopping her phone onto the plush duvet of her bed.
With a flourish, she tore open a box of Pocky, the crinkle of the wrapper echoing in the quiet room. She flopped onto her stomach, legs kicking idly in the air behind her, before finally deigning to answer him.
