Chapter 48 - Chapter 45: Returning to the Burrow, Harry Recognizes a Sworn Sister

It was dark, with only a few stars for light. Fred and George, seeing the shapes, thought Harry had murdered people on his way. They both shrieked.

"You killed people? Muggles or wizards?"

"Wait! Harry, did you use a Memory Charm on them?"

The two chattered on about how to dispose of the bodies, until Mrs. Weasley's face darkened.

She waved her wand and cast a Silencing Charm.

"Enough! What do you two think Harry is, a dark wizard?"

She was standing next to Harry and could see clearly. What had rolled on the ground were three animal heads: a pig, a cow, and a sheep.

Mrs. Weasley said gently, "Harry, what are you doing with these heads?"

"I don't recall any potion requiring animal heads."

Harry clasped his hands. "Madam, if I may say, it is not for a potion, but in admiration of the high style of the Peach Garden. I have prepared these sacrifices to swear an oath of brotherhood with Brother Ron and Big Sister Hermione."

"Unfortunately, that scoundrel Dobby vexed this one, draining my strength and delaying me. Now these three sacrifices have begun to rot."

The English had no custom of "sworn brotherhood." Mrs. Weasley was baffled by the term "Yi Jie Jin Lan."

She just assumed Harry wanted to use some Muggle ritual to grow closer to Ron and Hermione.

She smiled. "It's all right, Harry. We raise pigs at the Burrow. As for the cow and sheep heads, I'll have George buy them from the Muggle village tomorrow."

Harry cried "Aiya!" and bowed deeply. "In that case, Harry thanks you in advance, Madam."

"Oh, Harry, you are such a polite young wizard. If Ron and the others were half as well-mannered as you, I'd be satisfied."

Ron and the others, hearing this, clicked their tongues silently, not daring to speak.

Harry? Polite?

They would sooner believe that Snape's mouth really did connect to a cow's backside.

They gathered the luggage, and the Weasley brothers escorted Harry inside. Behold:

In the east room, cauldrons sat next to potions; in the west, baskets sat on shovels. On the south window, robes hung with patches upon patches; on the north wall, a clock's hands chased each other. In the attic, a ghoul howled; in the garden, gnomes chattered. It was, as they say, a sparrow small, but with all five organs intact.

Seeing Harry looking around, Ron looked a bit embarrassed. "Ahem, it's not much, probably not as nice as your place at Privet Drive."

Harry, seeing him belittle himself, said, "Brother, you mustn't speak so. We are men of the Jianghu [martial world]; we recognize only 'righteousness' (义)!"

"Who cares for some palace of golden tiles? It is cold and without a trace of humanity. I would rather snore in a pigsty with a brother than be there."

These words came straight from the heart, making everyone's blood run hot. Not just Ron, but even the middle-aged man reading the paper by the fire, who quickly put on his glasses to get a better look at the newcomer.

"Oh! Harry Potter!" The thin man leaped up. "Good heavens, you're finally here!"

"My name is Arthur. Arthur Weasley."

Arthur, his hair thinning, looked eager as he shook Harry's hand. "Ron has told me so much about you. I never thought a first-year wizard could—"

Before he could finish, Mrs. Weasley's voice bellowed from the kitchen. "Arthur! Your sons took your flying car out again today!"

"Oh? How did it fly—Ahem, I mean, they really shouldn't have done that."

Mrs. Weasley, puffed up like a bullfrog with rage, grabbed her spatula and began to argue with Arthur.

Ron, annoyed, pulled Harry upstairs. "Come on, Harry, let's go find Hermione."

They went upstairs, and Ron knocked on Ginny's door. The door flew open.

Hermione, seeing Harry, was thrilled and threw her arms around him in a hug.

"Harry! You scared me to death! When you suddenly went back to fight that house-elf, I was so worried."

Ron found this odd. "That's not like you. I thought you'd go back and try to reason with Harry."

"You think I didn't want to? I didn't know how to control those talismans!" Hermione put her hands on her hips. "I ran around the outskirts of Ottery St. Catchpole for several laps before I dared to rip them off!"

After more than half a month, the three were finally reunited, with much to say.

Ron invited them, "Come on, let's talk in my room. I've got some wine Fred nicked."

"Oh, Ginny," Hermione said, looking back. "I'll come back tomorrow to tell you about school, all right?"

Ginny was the youngest of the seven Weasley children and usually a ball of fire. But now, seeing Harry, she just twisted the hem of her robes, more shy than a sheltered young maiden.

Harry found this strange. Ron whispered in his ear, "My sister is your biggest fan."

Harry understood.

He was about to speak to Ginny, but remembering it was a lady's bedchamber, he stopped at the threshold, clasped his hands, and announced:

"Sister Ginny, you need not be a stranger. Brother Ron and I are friends who have faced death together; even a blood-brother is not as close."

"Sister, just regard me as your older brother. If you have any request, I will not refuse."

With that, he took twenty Galleons from his person and presented them as a meeting-gift for his sworn sister.

Ginny already admired Harry's reputation. Now, seeing him in person, she saw he truly was a man of extraordinary bearing, heroic and righteous.

She was smitten, and measured her every move, afraid she would embarrass herself and cause Harry to look down on her.

"Oh, all right, Harry-brother."

Harry-brother?

Ron repeated the words in his head, and all 36,000 pores on his body opened, breaking out in a cold sweat. He felt as if he'd been struck by lightning, a numbness running from his head to his tailbone and down to his toes.

"Ugh! Ginny, please be normal. You're acting like you've had your soul sucked out by a Dementor."

Ron gagged, which made Ginny grind her teeth. If Harry hadn't been there, she would have started a war.

"Ahem, I'm always like this, Ron-brother."

Ron shivered and quickly dragged Harry and Hermione away.

In his bedroom, he pulled a bottle of strong liquor from under his bed, and they drank and talked.

When they spoke of Dobby, the three discussed it for a long time but came to no conclusion. Harry could only push the matter to the back of his mind, to be discussed with Dumbledore later.

They finished the liquor, and went to their separate rooms to sleep.

When they awoke, the sun was high. Ron and Hermione came out and saw Harry setting up an offering table, laying out fruits and vegetables.

Ron blinked. "Harry, what are you doing?"

Harry smiled. "I am, of course, going to swear the oath of 'Yi Jie Jin Lan' with you, my Brother, and you, my Big Sister."

And so it was, they had faced death in the bathroom with the troll; they had faced hardship chasing Quirrell through the trapdoor. Their hearts were loyal, their courage true. Now at the Burrow, their bond was to be sealed. Would they truly become sworn siblings? You must listen to the next chapter.
