Seraphine's POV
Kayne sprinted off to retrieve the children while I settled beside Theodore in the vehicle. Waylon and the Shaman occupied the remaining seats. Theodore's head rested heavily against my thighs, his complexion ashen and his mouth slightly open as he struggled for each breath.
This wasn't the moment for hysteria, yet terror consumed me completely. How could it not? The man I loved, my destined partner, my husband teetered on death's precipice. Our supernatural connection grew fainter with each passing second, dissolving like grains of sand between my fingers. My shaking hand caressed his cheek tenderly. "Stay with me. You have to stay."
When he recovered, when consciousness returned to him, we would have words. The thought made tears stream harder down my face.
Our vehicle thundered through the dense woodland, jolting over the rough stone and earth pathway leading toward the ancient site.
