HARPER POV

"What about him?" I choked out. "Is he hurt? Did he get into an accident? Where is he?!"

He said nothing. He was watching me, as though trying to understand what was going on with me without having to ask too many questions.

"Damn it, William," I snapped. "Julian didn't tell you to come here so you could watch me. Did he?"

"He did."

I didn't catch what he meant at first until he spoke again.

"He wants me to come here to make sure you're alright." He paused, then added in a calm tone, "He told me everything."

"Oh," I whispered.

My chest tightened as the emotions rushed in all over again.

"I'm sorry," William murmured. "Sometimes what we want isn't what we get."

No.

That wasn't the case for Julian.

A bitter laugh escaped me. "That jerk."

A fucking coward.

He couldn't even stand in my presence to say it himself. To tell me everything he had written in that damned letter he left behind. He had sent someone else to do it.
