As soon as Julian and I stepped into the lobby of GenVanta, the world seemed to come to a standstill.
Everyone froze, abandoning whatever they had been doing just to stare at us, as if we were something pulled straight from a painting and they wanted to memorize us before we disappeared.
It reminded me of the first time I walked through these doors with Dominic. Except then, we had been nobodies. Now, we were something worse. A scandal. A duo that society believed had no right to exist anywhere near a respectable establishment.
"Is that the boss's wife?" A woman said.
"Why is she with someone else?" Another chimed in.
"She's a gold digger, of course," a third woman muttered under her breath. "And who knows, maybe that one just wants to hit it and run once he's done."
Julian stopped walking.
I felt his body stiffen beside me as he slowly turned toward the women, whose eyes were still fixed shamelessly on us. They shrugged the moment they noticed me staring back at them.
