Hades wondered this silently. His violet eyes lingered on her frozen face, dark and unblinking, as he studied her with idle patience. He found himself curious about the thoughts that must be swirling inside her pretty little head— fear, resistance, perhaps even hope, all carefully restrained beneath that still exterior.
The girl before him was beautiful, there was no denying that. Yet through his long life, he had learned that beauty was always the first to fade. It charmed easily and disappointed just as quickly, its novelty rotting away until admiration turned into dull inevitability.
In the end, once beauty decayed, all that remained was bone and dust.
That truth, however, did not lessen his interest in Evangeline.
