Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 — The Unconventional Mentor

The morning air in the Azure Dragon Sect was crisp and filled with the scent of pine. Li Wei stretched, trying to shake off the lingering soreness from yesterday's sparring with Zhang Lei. He thought he was ready for anything—until Master Shen approached with a small, wiry man trailing behind him.

"Li Wei," Shen said, voice grave, "meet your cultivation mentor."

Li Wei blinked at the man in question. He looked less like a martial arts master and more like a mischievous trickster. His robe was patched in odd places, his hair stuck out in multiple directions, and he carried a wooden staff that seemed far too thin to be dangerous.

"Hello! I'm… uh…" Li Wei began cautiously.

The mentor grinned, cutting him off. "I am Elder Bai. You will call me that, or you will regret it." He wiggled his thin staff threateningly, though it looked more like a broomstick than a weapon.

Li Wei's brain whirred. Great. Another eccentric. Just what I need. "Nice to meet you, Elder… Bai. I'm Li Wei, a humble… um… student?"

Bai snorted. "Humble? Hah! You barely survived your first sparring match! You're chaotic, reckless, and potentially dangerous to yourself. Perfect. You and I will get along famously."

Li Wei blinked. "Perfect? You mean… not perfect? Because I'm kind of hoping to survive first before we start… famous interactions."

Elder Bai waved him off. "Survival is boring. We cultivate, we grow stronger, we learn to manipulate energy—and occasionally, we make life… interesting. You, my chaotic friend, are in for an education."

The first lesson began immediately. Li Wei was instructed to meditate and focus on cultivating Qi, the vital energy that all martial artists used to enhance their strength and speed.

"Sit still. Breathe. Feel the Qi in your body," Elder Bai instructed.

Li Wei did as told, crossing his legs and trying not to fidget. Seconds passed. Minutes. He felt nothing. "Uh… Elder Bai? I think my Qi is on vacation. Or maybe it's stuck in traffic?"

Bai chuckled. "Modern mind, modern excuses. Relax! Qi is alive within you, but you must learn to sense it. Try moving it with your mind."

Li Wei closed his eyes and imagined Qi like… electricity. Or maybe like Wi-Fi signals. He concentrated. Nothing happened. Then he sneezed violently. A small leaf flew across the courtyard and hit Zhang Lei, who had been watching from afar.

Zhang Lei coughed. "What the—?"

Li Wei opened one eye. "Uh… Qi attack?" he muttered, utterly confused but secretly impressed with his accidental success.

Bai clapped. "Excellent! You created an energy discharge! Now, control it, channel it, and don't hit innocent bystanders next time!"

Li Wei scratched his head. "Step one: survive mentor. Step two: don't kill anyone by accident. Step three… figure out how to make this Qi thing useful without exploding myself."

Over the next few days, training with Elder Bai was chaotic. While other disciples practiced in strict stances and formal routines, Li Wei was learning via unconventional methods:

Balancing on tree stumps to enhance leg strength (and falling hilariously off them).

Using improvised weights like rocks and logs, claiming, "Modern gyms would approve!"

Experimenting with Qi manipulation by attempting to "push" water in a pond… accidentally creating a small splash that drenched two nearby disciples.

Despite the absurdity, progress was evident. Li Wei's movements became slightly more controlled. His energy flickers began to respond to thought, albeit unpredictably. And though his methods were far from traditional, Elder Bai seemed quietly impressed.

"You are chaotic," Bai said one evening, leaning on his staff. "But chaos can be a weapon. Discipline is the blade; chaos is the fire. Learn to merge them, and you may become formidable."

Li Wei's grin widened. "Merge chaos with discipline… got it. Step one: confuse my opponents. Step two: use Qi effectively. Step three… profit? Wait, scratch that. Survival first. Then profit."

Just then, Zhang Lei approached, his expression a mixture of amusement and mild exasperation. "I see you've met Elder Bai. He's… different, isn't he?"

Li Wei nodded. "Different? He's… unpredictable. Hilarious. A little scary. And apparently thinks my chaos is a feature."

Zhang Lei smirked. "He does have a way of pushing people beyond their limits. You might actually survive Murim if you can handle him… and me."

Li Wei laughed. "Oh, don't worry. Surviving you? Already halfway there. Handling Elder Bai? That's the real challenge."

That night, as he lay in his small dormitory, Li Wei reflected on the day. The Murim world was strange, dangerous, and occasionally terrifying. But with his hot-headed nature, modern knowledge, and a chaotic mentor guiding him, he was starting to feel… alive.

"Alright, Qi," he muttered to himself, flexing his fingers, "let's see if we can make you work… without blowing up anything—or anyone. Step one: survive the first real cultivation lesson. Step two: survive Elder Bai's tests. Step three… maybe figure out a way to save money around here. Wait… I already said that. Never mind. Step four: chaos reigns supreme!"

The stars twinkled above the Azure Dragon Sect, casting silver light across the courtyard. Li Wei smiled, energized by the promise of more training, more mishaps, and the strange thrill of a Murim life filled with martial arts, laughter, and unending chaos.

One thing was certain: with Elder Bai as his mentor, survival was going to be an adventure… and he wouldn't have it any other way.
