Chapter 35 - Chapter 34 – Where We Go From Here

Morning came gently.

Sunlight filtered through pale clouds, touching the sanctuary in soft gold. Asher woke to the sound of wind moving through stone corridors and the distant call of mountain birds. For a moment, he lay still, letting the calm settle into him.

It felt earned.

Lucian was already awake, seated near the open balcony doors, watching the horizon. He turned as Asher stirred.

"You look like someone who finally slept," Lucian said.

Asher smiled. "I think I did."

They shared a quiet breakfast in the courtyard — simple food, warm tea, no urgency pressing between breaths. The Keeper joined them briefly, her expression thoughtful.

"The Council will not interfere," she said. "Not now. Not openly."

"And Cassandra?" Asher asked.

"She will watch," the Keeper replied. "But watching is not the same as ruling."

Asher nodded. That was enough.

Later, they walked beyond the inner walls, along a path overlooking the valley. Snow lingered in shaded places, but spring pressed close beneath it.

"I don't know what my life looks like now," Asher admitted. "I can't go back to what it was."

Lucian stopped, turning to face him. "You don't have to return to a life that no longer fits."

Asher met his gaze. "And you?"

Lucian's answer came without hesitation. "Wherever you choose to be."

Asher exhaled, emotion tightening his chest. "Then I choose this. The sanctuary. Balance. A place where no one is owned or erased."

Lucian smiled. "A guardian of balance, then."

Asher shook his head, smiling back. "Not alone."

They stood together, the wind tugging at their clothes, the world wide and open before them.

For the first time, Asher wasn't stepping into the unknown out of fear.

He was stepping into it by choice.

Lucian reached for his hand — not urgently, not possessively — just there.

Asher laced his fingers through Lucian's.

The locket rested quietly against his chest.

Its purpose fulfilled.
