Chapter 77 - The power at play

"The nobility system is crucial to understand," Alaric explained. "At the bottom of the hierarchy are the Barons—they typically control a single major town and the surrounding farmland and villages. Above them are the Viscounts, who oversee multiple baronies and serve as regional administrators."

Lisa played quietly with a piece of bread while the adults talked, occasionally making small castles with her crumbs that she would then dramatically destroy.

"The Counts hold even greater power," Alaric continued. "They control entire provinces, command significant military forces, and have direct access to the royal court. Above them are the Marquises, who typically oversee border regions or areas of strategic importance. They're essentially the kingdom's first line of defense against external threats."

Lyra nodded along, clearly familiar with this information, but she seemed to enjoy watching Alaric share his knowledge with their son.

"At the apex are the Dukes," Alaric said with obvious respect in his voice. "There are only five ducal families in the entire kingdom, and they essentially serve as the royal family's closest advisors and most powerful vassals. Each Duke controls territory roughly equivalent to what some smaller kingdoms claim in their entirety."

"And above them?" Kael asked, though he could guess the answer.

"The Royal Family, of course. King Sivgard the Third, Queen Elara, and their children. They hold absolute authority over the entire kingdom, though in practice they rely heavily on the Dukes for day-to-day governance."

Alaric paused to take a sip of his morning coffee before continuing. "The higher the title, the more respect you command, the more territory falls under your control, and the more resources you can draw upon. A Baron might have a few hundred soldiers at his disposal, while a Duke can field armies numbering in the tens of thousands."

"Where do we fit in this hierarchy?" Kael asked, gesturing around their comfortable but modest home.

"Our village falls under the territory of Baron Memphis," Alaric replied. "He's actually a decent ruler as nobles go—fair taxation, reasonable laws, doesn't interfere too much with local governance as long as we meet our obligations."

Lyra made a small sound of agreement. "Baron Memphis visits perhaps once every few years for formal inspections. Otherwise, he's content to let the Village Head manage local affairs."

"However," Alaric's expression grew more serious, "since we're on the outskirts of his territory, security is... loose. The Baron's forces are concentrated around his main holdings, closer to the trade routes and major population centers. Villages like ours are largely left to fend for themselves in times of trouble."

This explained a great deal about their current situation, Kael realized. If they were dealing with necromancers and other threats, they couldn't expect rapid assistance from higher authorities. They were truly on their own.

"That's why," Alaric continued, "individuals with exceptional talent like yours are so valuable. The nobility is always looking for promising young people to recruit into their service. A purple-level awakening... that could open doors you've never imagined."

"What kind of doors?" Kael asked, though part of him was thinking about Arthur's desperate attempts to gain power through far more dubious means.

"Knight training in a proper academy, access to advanced magical instruction, possible positions in noble households or even the royal court itself," Alaric said, his pride evident. "Your sister Leona's awakening got her recruited into the Royal Knights. Your purple talent could take you even higher."

Lisa looked up from her bread castle destruction. "Does that mean Kael will go away like Leona did?"

The innocent question cast a momentary shadow over the conversation. Leona's departure to serve in the capital had been a source of both pride and sadness for the family.

"Not necessarily," Lyra said gently, reaching over to smooth Lisa's hair. "But it might mean he has opportunities to see more of the world than just our little village."

As the family conversation continued, Kael found himself thinking about the complex hierarchy of the world he was now part of. He was at the absolute bottom and had a whole lot to climb, but that only made him excited. The challenge of rising through the ranks, of gaining real power and influence—it stirred something ambitious and hungry within him.

Just then, Ellie appeared with a tray filled with perfectly prepared meat and steaming bowls of soup. As she set the dishes on the table, her eyes briefly met Kael's. A soft blush spread across her cheeks as she remembered their encounter in the kitchen, and she quickly looked away, busying herself with arranging the plates.

"This looks wonderful, Ellie," Lyra said warmly. "You've outdone yourself."

"Thank you, my lady," Ellie replied softly, stealing one more quick glance at Kael before retreating back toward the kitchen.

Lisa clapped her small hands together in delight. "It smells so good!"

Alaric raised his cup in a toast. "To Kael's awakening, to our family's future, and to the adventures that lie ahead."

They all raised their cups—even Lisa with her small mug of milk—and the simple gesture filled the dining room with warmth and love. For a moment, surrounded by his family's genuine affection and pride, Kael could almost forget the darkness that lurked at the edges of his new life.
